I am planning on becoming a history or English teacher at the secondary (high school) level, but I'm not sure if I should major in secondary education, or just major in the subject area I will be teaching and go for my certification seperately. What does anybody suggest?

it depends on the state..I'm from NY...and the certification requirements are crazy..you need a certain amount of education classes..you can't just major in english and never take an ed class.
most schools i've checked out here make you major in the subject, ie english, and minor in education to get the requirements.

You should major in the field you want to teach and get your teacher certification while in college.
