Hey all. I have been curious about this for a long time, and I want some opinions on the matter. I am an American citizen, was born here, have lived here my entire life, but am 100% Iranian, aka Persian. My parents moved here something like 26 years ago and have both become citizens over time.
Here's the problem. During all those elementary/middle school standardized tests, I would put white/caucasian when it asked for my race. Now, as I got older, I asked my dad if I indeed am asian, but he says to not put that on college apps and such because first of all, being asian doesn't help much as a minority and second of all, we're not asian. Well within the past year or so, I've been putting "other" as my race, for my sat/act/APs. Is this something smart to do? Are Iranians even considered as a minority? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Iranians would be considered Middle Eastern, a sub type of Asian. When those forms say Asian, they usually have East Asian and West/South Asian.

I am half korean and half jewish. Do i put the race i most closely identify with?
By Roosh (Roosh) on Sunday, August 17, 2003 - 06:16 pm: Edit
Ok, so then what do I do, put West Asian?

Whoooa Masamune. Being Jewish is not a race, it's a religion, which can be stretched to say maybe "a way of life". So you put Asian.

And neither Korean nor Jewish is a "bump" in the admissions game.
Roosh, the whole ethnic thing doesn't map well to reality. "Southwest Asian" is most accurate. But I've got to tell you that "Persian" or any variant thereof isn't considered a minority...you become an interesting statistical blip, nothing more.

You are a minority but you are not a protected social welfare class under Affirmative Action. As simply put by an adcom I know, there's simply too many of your kind on campus.

Hey Covalentbond, are you talking about me or Roosh?

How about someone from Surinam (English speaking, but in South America)?
By Covalentbond007 (Covalentbond007) on Sunday, August 17, 2003 - 11:35 pm: Edit
Protected welfare classes under Affirmative Action are
3) Native American
4) Main Island Puerto Rican
While indeed you may bring "diversity" (skin color) to campus, you may be an under-represented minority, and you may have suffered discrimination, you will not receive preferential treatment unless you are one of the racial groups listed above.
I have a dream, where one day my four children will post on a college board asking if their ethnicity will help them get into college. I have a dream where achievement is secondary to skin color. I have dream where government can discriminate on the basis of race if they say it is for "diversity". Oh yes, I have a dream.

"Protected welfare classes"
I have a dream also. I hope that your four children will not let such an insensitivity permeate their speech.

Iranians are Caucasian or White. (Webster)
Caucasian (commonly referred to as White) race is a major ethnic division of the human species having skin color varying from very light to brown. These people are natives of Caucasus Mountains, which are in the SW region of Soviet Union or Northern region of Iran (depending on the time periods when the borders were established).

ha ha ha - what an answer....
can't i have a serious one, whether germany is a minority (seen from a college's prospective) or not?
By Xiggi (Xiggi) on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 06:46 pm: Edit
The answer is NO
To be considered an Under Represented Minority, you have to be:
1. Nationality: a US citizen or a US Permanent REsident
2. Race: African American, Hispanic, Native American or a Pacific Islander.
So you have a nationality criteria and a race criteria. Germans are "typically" caucasians.
