I have heard that if a student takes course at a school as a non-degree student, and do well they are typically admitted, is this myth or partially true?

It depends on the college, but this is one way some schools "check out" possible students prior to admission. This might be particularly true for a non-traditional applicant, or one whose stats wouldn't allow normal admission.
