On the common app (and many others as well, I assume) there is a blank for any additional information for the admissions people. Am I expected to have something witty and meaningful to put there? Would leaving it blank make for a sure trip to the reject pile? Or is this merely an optional thing for kids who need to explain that their grades are low for sophomore year because they had leukemia?

I think it's just for anyhting you feel is important for the college(s) to know about. So it may be lousy grades because of an illness or that your dog ate your homework every day. For me it was that I have a double schedule and not a lot of time for extracurriculars (and not the best of options for classes either) because my school is psychotic and gives me 11-13 hour days. I think it's just to show how you are unique or special. Plus, especially on the common app, I'm not sure if all of the colleges use that section, so depending on where you're applying, it may not even matter if you leave it blank.
