I am applying for admission to Brown University for Fall, 2003–the same semester that Brown’s new needs-blind admission policy goes into effect. While I believe I understand the academic benefits to be derived from the new admissions standard, I am unable to see how a needs-blind policy will contribute to diversity of the student population. The policy seems to contradict the philosophy of Brown’s current President, Ruth Simmons. I wonder if anybody can tell me what affects have been historically noted in other institutions after the introduction of such a policy?
