Is writing about volunteer work a bad idea? I volunteer at a hospital with kids who are awaiting transplants or who have other life threatening illnesses. It seems like it isn't a good idea to write about this kind of stuff because it's too ordinary.

It all depends on the delivery as much as the substance. If you can make it extraordinary - go for it!

It's a bit ordinary. Very easily fallen into cliche of "some dying patient help me realize the value of life."
Agree with Momof2 though. It all depends on how you write it.
