According to the paper application of the UC schools the personal statement is limited to 2 single sided pages.

What is the limit on the online app? (i tried to look, but it's closed for now)

bump; anyone know?

By Icarus (Icarus) on Tuesday, August 05, 2003 - 02:43 am: Edit

The 2 page limit no longer applies. The new limit is 1000 words total for all of the questions. One of the questions is recommended to have an answer of at least 600 words.

What are the questions besides the personal statement?

By Nautical_2000 (Nautical_2000) on Tuesday, August 05, 2003 - 12:42 pm: Edit

Icarus, I was under the impression that the only writing we had to do was one personal statement.

By the way, I'm applying to UCSD (maybe Berkeley) for one of the bio/chem/health majors -- if that helps.

Also, anyone know the site where I can get that info? I've been to the UC schools site and downloaded their paper app instructions which had said 2 pgs...

No... new for the Fall 2004-2005 application are three separate personal statement essays, all of which must total 1000 words or less.

This page from the UC has more info on the topic, including all the new questions

entering fall 2004

By Entropie (Entropie) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 12:18 am: Edit

wait, so you have to answer all 3? what if you don't really have something to say for one of them? that's CRAP!

it would be best if you got like 5 questions, and had to choose 3 out of those, but this really puts you in a corner.

By Mcp (Mcp) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 01:01 am: Edit

TWO "questions" you have to be answered--the third is optional(!).The word limit is 1000 words-one of the questions has to be a 600 words "answer".I found the THREE questions to be much better then the personal statement

By Icarus (Icarus) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 05:29 pm: Edit

no - all three questions are required

By Nautical_2000 (Nautical_2000) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 08:11 pm: Edit

the question that i hate is the one that goes, "how have you taken advantage of educational opps in order to prepare for college?" (or something like that)

only the best of writers could personality into that... if anybody has suggestions, i'd appreciate it...

By Entropie (Entropie) on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 - 12:16 am: Edit

yeah, that question is awful. please help me too. will having done independent research, like a lab study be a good topic to talk about in my essay? (since it asks about an interest devoted to a particular subject).thanks to anyone who replies!

Icarus, are you sure?

i have the paper application and it's NOTHING like this.

By Icarus (Icarus) on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 08:41 am: Edit

From what i understand (which is only from what i have read on the website i referenced earlier and from my friend who is applying to the UC next year as well), all three are required. I don't have the actual paper application in front of me; as a matter of fact, i don't think even the paper app for 2004-2005 has been released yet, so are you sure you have the correct one? If you do, i guess just try to check with some other sources. i'll try to look for some other documentation in the meantime.

i have a random question..it says on the instructions that you print your social security number in the top right corner of the page
what do you put if your international?

and i also need help with the first question..
1a. (Freshman applicants only): How have you taken advantage of the educational opportunities you have had to prepare for college?

By Nautical_2000 (Nautical_2000) on Sunday, August 17, 2003 - 09:34 am: Edit

that first q is definitely a tuffie. i'm sure everyone has an answer to that, but wording it is going to be the difficult part. anyone have any suggestions???

By Spectzix (Spectzix) on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 08:03 am: Edit

how should the personal statement be written?
should it be straight forward answers to the question they give?

By Delfin (Delfin) on Tuesday, August 19, 2003 - 09:24 am: Edit

focus on one event that shows you took advantage of your opps. like you joined a summer enrichment, or developed a special interest...
