Hi all is anyone going to apply for ROTC scholarships? I'm goin' for Navy!
By Jayv85 (Jayv85) on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 10:44 pm: Edit
I'm going into army ROTC (which I still have to call up the guy to apply to, I'll do that tomorrow). I was thinking of applying to the scholarship, but now I'm second thinking about it. I did tell the recruiter that I didn't care about the scholarship, because I don't. I just want to be in ROTC. But the second thing is, I was told people who normally get it have an SAT score of 1200 or better. I have an SAT score of 980, and I doubt I'm going any higher. I mean, I tried on SATs, I studied (by myself as best I could because my teachers couldn't help and I don't have money for the classes) but I just can't seem to get 1000. I took ACTs and got a 21, so that won't help me either. I'm not captain in track, mainly because this year I switched events. I didn't get section leader in band either. I don't have a really high GPA either, it's mainly average. So I've been thinking about just forgetting about applying.

It's a program you take in college. Reserved Officers Training Corp is what it's called. Pretty much they drill you and everything like you're in the military, but it's like a class in that they'll teach you battle strategies and all. In other words, they train you for the 4 years in college to become an officer in the military. And after taking the 4 years of it in college, you have to make an 8 year commitment to the military.

I'm applying for army & navy 4 year. I hope to get into princeton ed w/ a 4 year army scholarship.

I'm thinking about going Army. Probably not, though. I have some medical restrictions.
By Jayv85 (Jayv85) on Thursday, July 17, 2003 - 11:10 pm: Edit
Did you all already sign the papers to be in it or are you waiting? If you didn't; when are you going to sign up?

Jay so what is the difference between ROTC and applying to west point or such?
By Jayv85 (Jayv85) on Friday, July 18, 2003 - 08:50 am: Edit
Um, I have no clue. You would have to search on the internet or ask around about that. All I know something about is ROTC. I don't know what they do in West Point
By Crazyandy (Crazyandy) on Friday, July 18, 2003 - 08:59 am: Edit
West Point is the US Military academy. They educate kids (pending you get in cuz its highly competative) and then they send you into the Army to do your service (west point, like the other military academies, are free). Check out their webside or search them. I guess ROTC is kind of the same, though with ROTC you can go to the college of your choice basically and major in whatever you want.
By Mattymatt (Mattymatt) on Friday, July 18, 2003 - 05:10 pm: Edit
Thanks.. I heard from someone that people who attend the naval academy or the military academy are all essential assigned officer positions, while those in such ROTC programs tend to be the lower ranked soliders in the military.. true?
i'm semi-interested in applying to the naval academy/marine corp
By Ickyfoo (Ickyfoo) on Friday, July 18, 2003 - 08:00 pm: Edit
mattymatt-thats not true, both rotc & the academies produce officers (hence the name, Reserve Officer Training Corps)

how far along is everyone on the application process? I'm applying for NROTC, and have already filled out the application and had a preliminary interview. Everything is in, and as soon as I have a final interview, at the end the fficer will tell me yes you have it or no you don't, but as it stands now I have the scholarship. Thats because of immidiate select decision, anyone else know what I'mt alking about? NROTC is really my second choice, USNA has always been my dream but... Just wondering how far along everyone else is
By Mossad (Mossad) on Sunday, July 27, 2003 - 10:29 pm: Edit
My application is sent in, evaluations are done, other paperwork is finished, and I completed the officer interview. So basically the application is done.
What is immediate select decision. Is this some type of option I had to apply for?
By Starzfun82 (Starzfun82) on Monday, July 28, 2003 - 12:40 am: Edit
No, its not an option. You're recruiter can select 10 people out of the whole district (state or larger) to nominate for it. It's not common knowledge, yur recruiter would tell yu if it was an option, so I guess not. But good luck

Damn, I went to a 3 week summer program and now I'm behind. I'm doing the Army ROTC, and all I have left on the application is to write the essay. Hopefully I'll finish that this week.
Good luck everyone!
By Starzfun82 (Starzfun82) on Monday, July 28, 2003 - 03:43 pm: Edit
Lol, I know what you mean, I left school early, went to summer seminar at the naval academy, then came straight to an 8 week NASA internship, and I'm still here. I understand what our parents mean, working 40 hrs a week, cooking, doing laundry, writing 2 research papers, and you want me to think about college!?! lol Good luck to the Class of 2004, I think the application part is worse than anything they can dish out in college....

For those applying for Army ROTC, what did you talk about in your essay/personal statement?
I just have to finish my personal statement then send everything in.
Thanks

for rotc, you have to be accepted for a scholarship but apply to a college completely separately right? is it possible to go to grad school if you do rotc? is it possible to change majors with a scholarship? thank you.
By Starzfun82 (Starzfun82) on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 - 01:20 pm: Edit
Applying to ROTC and to college are two completely separate processes. You usually don't go to grad school right after graduation, until you have served at least one tour of duty, however that depends on you rank, service, major, etc, and can't be determined really til you're in college. I don't know about changing majors, but what majors you can have on an ROTC scholarship are dependant on the service. Hope this helped...

thanks a lot starzfun. i dont know about rotc cuz i wanna go to grad school and by the time im done service, undergrad and grad, ill be 31. by then i might as well be dead. i also want to be able to change my major. is there anyway you can get a job with the army after graduation if you're not in rotc without a commitment?

I went to summer seminar, and it was the best 6 days of my entire life. I've wanted nothing but usna since the end of elementary school, ive read every book and seen movies, read articles, lol, you name it. What session did you go to? I have a question:
In interviews & email correspondences w/ the ROTC people, should one address them as sir or ma'am?
And what's the interview like?

I addressed my interviewer as sir, even though it really isn't really necessary. It shows respect, but then again, you're not in the military yet... I did, but then again I am in Civil Air Patrol, so sir and ma'am are second nature to me. I say that if it'sd akward for you to use it, then don't, but you can't usually go wrong with it. My interview wasn;t bad... And to Iloveharvard, I went to session one, Alpha-Four-One

If any of you are electrical engineers or meterology majors, Air Force ROTC may have some big bucks for you. The scholarship money is usually reserved for engineers and science majors. As a mechanical engineering I was offered a $15,000 per year scholarship plus book reimbursement. I spent my sophomore year as a cadet but I am not in AFROTC anymore for various reasons. Hopefully I can get into OTS after graduation. Air battle management is my first choice.
Downside of AFROTC: At least at my detachment, it wasn't hard core enough for me. Being the Air Force, they focus more on professional training rather than trying to toughen someone up. That happens in training after commisssioning. I would rather do AROTC stuff while in college but do USAF as a career. I mean the Army brought six Blackhawk choppers to campus for the Army cadets since they couldn't go to their training grounds. The most exciting thing I go to do was join a drill team and be a color guard commander.

Do you mean the scholarship application?
By Jayv85 (Jayv85) on Saturday, August 02, 2003 - 07:16 pm: Edit
And don't feel bad because I haven't even started the scholarship application. I'm not sure if I want to try for it because my SAT and ACT aren't the greatest. I'm just above the required scores. So I highly doubt I'm actually going to get the scholarship. I guess I should start it so if I change my mind.
But if I do send it in. For track, should I put that I did it in 12th grade? I know for a fact I'm going to be running track (I have since 5th grade). Should I write in the remarks section that I've done track and band since 5th grade?

Does anyone here know, when the Navy Selection Board is going to convene to look over the applications. Mine is sent out, and now I just gotta sit tight for a response. I've heard anywhere from 4-7 business days from one source, to November from another.

for my personal statement. I had this thing written in my diary about war and going in it and all this other stuff with the military and my involvement. It was some big long thing. I'm going to fix it up and that'll be my personal statement. What I wrote in my diary is pretty much what they want in your personal statement. So, pretty much, just write exactly how you feel about everything and don't forget to state why.

what kind of questions did they ask you?
By Mossad (Mossad) on Tuesday, September 02, 2003 - 08:47 pm: Edit
Why do you want to be in NROTC?
Why do you want to be a Naval Officer?
How do you spend your free time?
What are your interests?
and some other questions just about yourself.
What do you want to do in the Navy?
Basically they want to gauge your desire to be in the service, and see if your goal is to be an officer in the serive, or simply to get a scholarship.

I had an interview for NROTC (its the only branch I want and am applying for), and I am going for my final interview a week from today, so I'll be able to tell you more then. But, I got all the questions Mossad said, plus...
What type of physical shape are you in?/Describe your training plan/Do you plan to keep in shape?
~Theyre looking for specific PRT oriented stuff (run, sit up, push up)
Anything in your life that has hindered your performance?
Proudest accomplishment?
Why did you pick the colleges you did?
Where do you see yourself in 1 years?
I give you guys an update after the final interview next week, good luck to all of you
On another note, anyone else applying academies too/How far are you,/ Which ones.....

I have a full Army ROTC scholarship to Cornell, my bro has a full Navy ROTC scholarhip.
I know this for a fact: The navy has a med school program for outstanding students. They will pay for grad school up to $50,000 per year and pay you a salary of $30,000 per year while you are in grad school. But then you owe them a certain amount of years after you graduate.
This navy med program is what my bro tryin for, we are freshmen at Cornell.

After I completed the app, of before I sent in the supplemental forms, I was called by the NROTC recruiter. (I had actually tlaked to him once before, because I logged in my sophmore yeart to look at the app, so my name came up) But he was the one who told me about the interview when he called and about ISD being a possibility.
