Which application were you looking at? If you can't find a section for community services, put it under Extracurricular Activities.

There's no set place for volunteer hours, which is why volunteering isn't all that important for college admissions purposes.

That's a lie... A full flat out lie. If you volunteer, colleges want you. It is very important.
If someone had a 3.9GPA with the ec's the same as someone with a 4.0GPA and the person with a 3.9 did 100 hours of comm service and the 4.0 did none, they would hands down choose the one with the 3.9

put it under ec's

there isnt enough room to put it under ECs---you cannot specify volunteer work and break it down then- which i think a lot of ppl do...
lol- what a quandary

If not enough space, put it on a resume and attach it with your app. and write "please see resume" on the given applicatoin.

I have a question about that:
How can colleges verify that you do what you say you do? For hospitals, it's easy, because the hospital can sign a thing saying how many hours you did; same with the shelter and some clubs. But aside from that, i have done 15-20 hours of volunteer tutoring a week since 7th grade. How do i show them that's true?

Your own integrity. And hopefully your recs will support what you say.

Well would it be smart to just type up volunteer work and attach it to the application???

look at the applications of the colleges you are interested in. Sometimes they have some open-ended invitation to attach an extra sheet or two if you feel there is something else they should know about you. Others actively discourage extra paper because they're already drowning in it. Others don't specify one way or the other. If the college you're interested in doesn't say, you can attach an extra sheet detailing your volunteer work, but you have to be prepared for the possibility that no one will read it. If your volunteer work is truly where your heart is, it would be better to fit at least a mention of it into the application somehow. If you just write "see attached" you can't count on the attachment getting a glance. Maybe this could be one of your essays, or maybe have someone who knows you from your volunteer work write an extra letter of recommendation. Or maybe there's some space for "employment" where you could put volunteer work. Otherwise, at a minimum you need a line under extra-curriculars with something like "volunteer docent at Elvis museum, 42 hours per week".

should volunteer work be throoughly documented, or can u just tell them that u work so many hours so many times a week. cause doesnt it seem a little selfish to see that some kid has documented every single minute of his volunteer work? but also, would it be more credible to document the hours?

My school transcript has volunteer hours on it (it's required to graduate).
If your school doesn't offer that, you can try applying for the President's Service Award (I think that's what it's called) for students who earn 100 hours within 1 year.
