I am wondering if there is an appreciable difference in admissions to colleges
like Brown/Penn/Columbia vs. Stanford and HYP. In order to seriously be considered at Yale (without legacy, URM, Athlete, etc) essentailly do you need to be
valedictorian or salutarian with a 1550 + and 750+s. In addition is there a significant difference in temrs of toughness of
academic currciulum at Columbia vs. Stanford

Now a personal question- My father went to columbia undergrad and stanford for business school. I want to apply to either or these schools early, and Stanford has early action, whereas columbia has early decision. For me, it is preferable to do early action, becuase I want to eventually have choices and I am not set on either of these schools (or any other for that matter). My extracuriculars are good and so are my SATs(over 1500) and grades (top 10%at private school). I would rather apply early to stanford, but i only want to do this, if i have a substntial
chance. I think i could get in2 columbia early decision, but i dont want to pass up the chances, whether meager or not, that I have at other schools- notably Yale, Stanford, and even some "lower tiers" like Wash U and michigan. What do you all recomend---early action at stanford or early decison at columbia?

Thanks

Definitely Stanford. I applied there, but was denied, maybe if I applied early action.......

I have one more question- If I apply to stanford, early action, and another studnet applies to stanford ealry action, will this lower my chances, or keep them the same, or make them higher? Is it more likely that stanford will accept one of us, and not neither? Is there a chance that both of us will be accepted?

If you know your contributions are appreciated.

Someone got into Stanford with a 1050 SAT score, but she was Egyptian and Valedictorian of her class, dunno what else she had--maybe her ACT was higher. Stanford cares *alot* about diversity, another person I know got in with a 25 ACT (in at Stanford and Cornell, valedictorian), but his hook was that he is a Native American, he will be matriculating at Cornell. =)

Also, Columbia and Cornell rejects 50% of people with perfect SAT scores.

HYP will be the most difficult to get in, especially Harvard.

For my previous message, i forgot to mention that the person who i was referring to, goes to my school and will also be applying early action. What does that do to my chances early?

this student is a real candidate- smart, SATs are good, etc ( she is either a defer or accept, like me- both her parents and my dad are legacy as well)

since all yall arent responding to my personal stroy (which is understandable), can we have a discussion about what the first paragraph of the initial post was actually about...admissions+acadmics- difference between ivy leage tiers?
