By Hbdesi (Hbdesi) on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 - 02:34 am: Edit

hey, was wondering whaqt kind of an effect the new UC campus will have on UC admissions. will it be easier to get into the better UC's cuz of the "trickle down" method or will colleges accept the same % of people as last year?

thanx for the input

UC Merced means balancing the super-fast population growth in California, and relieve the pressure of UCR and UCSC for having to admit top 6.5% (or is it 12.5%?) automatically.

No, UCM is only compensating for the growing population and the top whatever % policy.

I heard it has NO admissions standards, except for the UC one, so it'd be easier to get in than UCR.

So what are the UC rankings mow that UC Merced is in?

Tier 1 = UCB, UCLA, UCSD

Tier 2 = UCSB, UCI, UCD

Tier 3 = UCSC, UCR, UCM

By Greenmoo04 (Greenmoo04) on Saturday, May 31, 2003 - 12:09 pm: Edit

I believe UCSB, UCI, and UCD are all in the 1st Tier (according to US NEWS), they're all in the top 50, and they vary in whichever goes first. I'm not sure about Merced since they never had a freshman class, but I know Santa Cruz and Riverside is in Tier 2.

Everyone says the Merced is made to be garbage, but I've heard exactly the opposite. Apparently, the UC system made UC Merced so it would have a college to directly compete against STANFORD. Sure, it will take time, but there is a reason so much money is being spent on it. BTW, their med school is supposed to be amazing.

By Bioyuki (Bioyuki) on Saturday, May 31, 2003 - 09:15 pm: Edit

Well the UCs designed the college system at UCSD to compete with the Ivys and it didn't turn out as well as it was supposed to. Merced's med school might be great but it won't be able to touch UCSF.

By Crackcorn (Crackcorn) on Saturday, May 31, 2003 - 09:19 pm: Edit

UC already has a college to compete directly with Stanford. It's called Berkeley.

The town of Merced is a hellhole (92 degrees today). It's only redeeming quality is its relative proximity to Yosemite. UC Merced is the biggest thing ever to happen to the town and they are desperately awaiting its opening (which may be delayed a year by recent California budget cuts. Most of its applicants will come from Bakersfield, Fresno and other Central California cowtowns.

UC Merced made to compete with stanford? Now that's called funny. UC already has its flagship university about 30~40 miles from Stanford.
UC Merced is built for studnets in central valley, where currently there are only some Cal State schools, as Crackcron said. I believe this area is where Gray Davis came from.

Why don't they build a UC in Northern California? Up near Redding or Eureka or near the Oregon border

They already have a UC in the central valley, its UC-Davis. I always thought UC-Merced would just be another UC-Riverside, a place where ELC students who didn't get accepted anywhere else go. I could be wrong though.

Do you guys think UC-Merced will cause the other UC's to become less selective in the future?

By Samia (Samia) on Sunday, June 01, 2003 - 06:24 pm: Edit

yeah, Merced is a pretty crappy town...a population of about 100,000, located between Modesto (kidnap/murder capital of the US apparently) and Fresno...yeah. Nothing to do. I'd have suggested a UC in Fresno instead, just because then it would be right in between Sacramento and Bakersfield, thus accomodating all of the Central Valley.

The valley SUCKS! I don't care who you are, DON'T EVEN CONSIDER GOING TO UC MERCED! Unless you want to get lost in Tower District a lot and go to *excitement buildup* BISLA'S! Hm.. That's Fresno stuff. Just don't come here. You'll be unhappy, and sweaty...

By Spartan858585 (Spartan858585) on Sunday, June 01, 2003 - 10:03 pm: Edit

I don't think UC Merced will cause the UC's in general to become less selective. In fact I think UC Merced will make some of the lower tier UC's more selective. Specifically UC Santa Cruz and UC Riverside. The UC's will no longer have to defer less qualified students to these schools but instead defer them to UC Merced. I wouldn't be surprised if UCSC and UCR really made a push for the top 50 in the US News and World Rankings in a couple of years.
