I am recuperating from an calcified ankle tendon. If I twist my ankle one more time (it's happened 5 times already), I'll need surgery. My medical hardship, along with my loss of passion for running, makes me want to quit the cross country team. I have been on the cross country team for 3 years, one of which I was a captain in. If I return to the team for my senior year, I'll be a captain again. What should I do? If I quit the team, are my shots at an elite college gone (3.93/4, 1340 1st time- plan to get 1450 after SAT class)?

No your shots at an elite college are not gone. From what I know, colleges won't care unless you're a world champion (it's just another activity).

Sounds like a good essay to me...
