Hi everyone,
just curious but how did you all do your boards?
post results!

Thanks.

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 - 10:51 am: Edit

Dunno why nobody posts here, but I'm also awaiting my results on the 23rd. In case you don't know (which is not possible I think), http://cbseresults.nic.in/ has this email registration system and I bet people will get scores by e-mail sooner than they do online so that the network traffic is evenly distributed over time.

By Gangsta (Gangsta) on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 - 06:34 pm: Edit

I know a kid in India who got a 94 overall on the board exam. I wonder what rank that would be, but it seems to be really good.

By Hrithik (Hrithik) on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 09:57 am: Edit

Hey ppl!!
CBSE resuls still not out yet.. so waiting.. how was ur ISC greeshma??
Longhorn: hey where u heading.. dint hear from u before!!

btw guys does any1 know what the hell happened to that indians where u headed post??

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 02:21 pm: Edit

hi hrithik.. I'm new to this group, somewhat. Anxiously waiting for the results... exactly 8 hours to go! Surprising how many indians post on this site. Maybe you can search out in "message search" for the post you're looking for.

By Hrithik (Hrithik) on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 04:44 pm: Edit

I tried.. doesnt work..!!
so where are u heading longhorn.. best of luck in advance!!

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 04:47 pm: Edit

another thing you might try is to search this site using google.com. try typing in "indians where u headed site:collegeconfidential.com" on the google prompt.
I'm headed for MIT and Caltech, BTW. Wot about you?

By Hrithik (Hrithik) on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 06:34 pm: Edit

hey what dya mean for MIT and Caltech.. how can u be headed for both??
Im goin to UIUC

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 07:37 pm: Edit

I mean I haven't been admitted to any of them but would be doin that now. :)

By Sandy (Sandy) on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 07:40 pm: Edit

Is anyone here going to Rice?

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 04:15 am: Edit

Well!
CBSE seems to be taking a lot of time this year.Generally, they come out sooner than ISC!
My performance was ok.
Overall 92.4%
best 4 subjects:94%.
Hritik:search in the archives .

Good luck with CBSE!
Don't forget to post your results.

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 04:22 am: Edit

Not a very good result here.. but a full 96 marks in chemistry - the subject I hate the most!

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 04:25 am: Edit

Hey.. it seems Gogirl has almost made a record.. I mean, 92.4% aggregate is not easy stuff at all. In most cases that puts you on the top 5 in the school/city. WoW!
and btw, I was wrong and the email results were very late -in order to even out the traffic!

By Hrithik (Hrithik) on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 04:36 am: Edit

congrats gogirl..
got screwed here.. so ill keep my mouth shut..!!

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 07:35 am: Edit

ISC is so damned stingy when it comes to awarding marks;about 5 people got a 90% + from hyderabad.
But it is always the Bengalis who rule the roost;
the highest in isc is somewhere in between 95 and 96.I got 96%in chemistry too!
anyway ,we are more or less secured with our admissions ,so Hritik you need not feel bad!
How is the CBSE correction ?what are the highest %s any idea?
just curious,myself!

By Hrithik (Hrithik) on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 07:43 am: Edit

CBSE correction is sad in life.. as in no guarantees.. but generally there are some patterns like one subject gets screwed for one entire school/set and stuff like that. CBSE highest around 97 .. topper from my skool got 96 around 7-8 ppl past 90 btw all this overall best of four dont even ask!!

By Luda (Luda) on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 06:00 pm: Edit

My friend in india got a 100% in chemistry! Overall, he got 95% on the boards.

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Friday, May 23, 2003 - 11:27 pm: Edit

Wow!
ISC OR CBSE?

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Saturday, May 24, 2003 - 05:12 am: Edit

The topper in my school got 96.8% overall and 99 in chemistry! But its a pity to see the scores of some people who were studying for IIT. These absolute geeks got only 60-70%! and most of them didnt get through the entrance exam either. pretty sad

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Monday, May 26, 2003 - 03:35 am: Edit

Luda...I don't think that you friend would have got 100% in Chemistry for the simple reason taht the software which process the marks does not allow 3-digits and so in the boards the highest possible mark is 99%.....I gave my ICSE in 2002 .
This year the results in Jamshedpur, specially Loyola have been phenomenal...I think the guy whose topping in my school-Shishir Dash has topped in India ..he's got 97.5%
And he's on of those IIT aspirants.....he's got through the screening and let's ee now how he does in the mains....from my school 13 ppl got through the screening

By Hrithik (Hrithik) on Monday, May 26, 2003 - 10:48 am: Edit

HI Rashmi..
i also know a guy who got 100 chem so tht whole funda is incorrect.. i guess u would be an aspirant for the class of 2008.. best of luck!!

HI Rashmi..

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Monday, May 26, 2003 - 11:47 am: Edit

Hi Hrithik
I have a feeling that this 100% was scored on the CBSE Board and not on the ICSE/ISC.....b'coz I'm absolutely positive that ICSE/ISC does'nt give you the satisfaction of seeing two "o"'s preceded by a '1'!

By Binarydigit1010 (Binarydigit1010) on Monday, May 26, 2003 - 01:56 pm: Edit

yeah, ISC gives a highest of 99, CBSE gives 100's though
CBSE was ok this yr, except for english
i got 92 and my best 4 was 94.5

By Hrithik (Hrithik) on Monday, May 26, 2003 - 02:17 pm: Edit

Hi..
ya that hundred was on CBSE..no idea bout ISC.

Hey Bidigit: congrats.. where u heading?

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Wednesday, May 28, 2003 - 10:11 am: Edit

Guy from Hyderabad scored 98.4%in CBSE!
And there is no 100%in ISC ;because the software reverts back to a 00 mode for 100!

By Rahul (Rahul) on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 09:52 am: Edit

It's the first time I'm posting here, and boy,do I seem to be in such intellectual company.
Gogirl-I happened to read that you're going to IIT,Chicago, but in my humble opinion, shouldn't you be trying for BITS,Pilani considering the fact that you've got such an amazing %age.
You should be getting in easily.

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 10:00 am: Edit

Thanks!
But my IIT Admission was confirmed.
Besides, getting into Pilani may not be all that easy;Well!if you do know anyone who got into Pilani from ISC ,then Please post.

Btw,Where are you heading?

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 10:06 am: Edit

Gogirl-You got into IIT......COOL!!!!!!!!!...I think it's a good decision to go to IIT, even if you get through to Pilani b'coz IIT is definitely the best. Congrats once again.

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 10:26 am: Edit

No Rashmi, the IIT referred to here is the one in Chicago and not the one in Delhi or Bombay. IIT = Illinois Inst. of Tech. People who get into the Indian IIT *never* post here because they're too busy running to tuition centers for their entrance exams!

Hey Gogirl, you seriously have a good chance at BITS Pilani with that score, and IMHO you must atleast give it a try.

By Rahul (Rahul) on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 11:50 am: Edit

I'm gonna take a year off, since I'm a kind of guy who likes to focus on one thing at a time.So I"ve got to give some thought to the options I've got b4 me.
On another note, are you atleast applying, because you know and everybody else does, you'll get a much better education from BITS as compared to IIT,CHICAGO(Rashmi, this refers to you),at a really really low price.

JMO.

By Hrithik (Hrithik) on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 12:30 pm: Edit

Being on the subject
guys u know wat bits pilani's cutoff usually are 97% my friend dint make it with 95 pcm...sorry greeshma u can always transfer to mit or
uiuc ;-)!!
rahul: u taking a yr off for iit or abroad??

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Thursday, May 29, 2003 - 05:25 pm: Edit

Hi Rahul, we're kind of in the same boat. I'm also dropping a year for the same reason as you. So, where all are you applying and are you going for financial aid?

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 02:28 am: Edit

If you talk about IIT and Pilani together-most people would think it's the Indian one...specially blind people like me who are also scatterbrains and sometimes miss out on important details......anyways forget it...and Best of Luck everyone!!!!

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 03:03 am: Edit

Actually, getting into Pilani depends upon the highest % {ISC:around 96%:best 4}in the country ;and the best 4 subjects alone are taken into consideration.
There is a provision of dropping one subject for ISC and admission into Pilani.

Good idea to take an year off!May be I should think about it myself and apply all over again.
Besides ,though I might have a chance the competition is terribly intense!

By Rahul (Rahul) on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 04:07 am: Edit

Well.I knowof a person in Bangalore who got 95 in ENG,97in Chem and Phy and 98 in math and 95 in Bio.That must be the highest in ISC so you can calculate your chances!

By Sim98211 (Sim98211) on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 05:40 am: Edit

hi ppl
forget about pilani, if it suits u, sit down and study for JEE....if u get through, u get in return the best deal the country has to offer.

By Hrithik (Hrithik) on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 06:15 am: Edit

sim: a very teeny weeny if!!

Greeshma.. for u dropping a year would be futile ya.. ur scores will hardly go up.. ull be better off as a transfer..

but in all honesty and this is for all ppl the finaid scence is sad.... and dont expect on making places such as mit caltech cuz this yr i heard no1 got thru from ind now thats something.. look at it realistically guys and best of luck!!

By Rahul (Rahul) on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 06:59 am: Edit

I really haven't thought abt it.But I really don't want to got to the US,unless I get into a good college with some good fin aid. so I'm not thinking about the US as of now, what I am thinking of is NTU in Singapore or NUS which are closer home and less of a burden on my pocket.
And Australia too is an exciting proposition.
And frankly the only reason I want to drop the year is that I'm too lazy and tired after my boards,my studies that I desperately need a break
I really don't think I've got the brains to get into IIT,.....on second thoughts I might have the brains but I don't have the discipline when it comes to preparing for IIT-JEE.

And btw...Rashmi,don't be so hard on your self, everybody makes such silly mistakes!!!

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 12:30 pm: Edit

hey Rahul

the guy in Jamshedour, Loyola..still rulez-97.5%( I'm not sure about the no after the decimal-calculate for yourself if you are really keen(I'm just too lazy)...have'nt heard of anybody with more till now. His marks are-
eng-97
phy-98
chem-97
math-99
csc-dont really remember but in the 90's

So now Gogirl-calculate your chances...but on second thought sI don't think you need to take him or ppl with marks like him into consideration b'coz they'll probably be going to one of the IIT's in India.

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Saturday, May 31, 2003 - 01:47 am: Edit

Thanks Rashmi & Rahul!
These marks are definitely going to stun everyone in my school!

Btw,Are you planning on applying to the US.,Rashmi?

By Rahul (Rahul) on Saturday, May 31, 2003 - 01:54 am: Edit

Which school do you go to gogirl?

Rashmi:Even if that guy is not going to go to Bits, the fact is that he did get 97.75%(YEs,I calculated!!) and when the use that %ile system they will take this guy's marks for calculating the normalised aggregate for all ISC candidates.
At least that's what I think.

By Neyha (Neyha) on Sunday, June 01, 2003 - 03:05 am: Edit

wow...you guys have really high numbers..
my friends stayed in 80%s and they took the ICSC..is that what average?

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Tuesday, June 03, 2003 - 02:51 am: Edit

I am from Hyderabad and I went to HPS,Begumpet.I f you have heard abt. it!

Where are you from ,Rahul?
Which school are you from?
Neyha:It is ICSE:That is for class 10 students;ISC is for class 12 students!

Hi!
This is the first time I am posting a message here. You people seem to be great.I have finished with my ICSE board exams.I got an aggregate of 95%and 95.6% in english + best 4.I was also the head girl of my school.I really want to get into MIT as an undergraduate student. Can anybody of you advise me on what I should do the next two years to get into MIT? Pleeeaaaaase,I would really be very grateful .

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 - 01:49 am: Edit

Just study and concentrate on having a good Report Card.
Take part in Extra-curricular Activities-the certificates will be helpful later on.
Later this year give your SAT-I.....if your scores are good -great....if they are'nt try again after you give you SAT-II.
In the mean time concentrate on studying for Enggineering Entrance exams like the IIT-JEE(for Safety)
After doing all this I don't think you'll have time for anything else.

By Tangytan14 (Tangytan14) on Thursday, June 12, 2003 - 04:09 am: Edit

Thanks for your advice,Rashmi.I know of some people who got into MIT as undergraduate students and almost all of them had participated in maths and science olympiads at the national and the international level.Do you think getting through olympiads gives one an edge over others? And can anybody give me some advice on how to perform well in the olympiads? Are there any specific books that should be consulted?

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Thursday, June 12, 2003 - 09:07 am: Edit

Ok Tangytan
Concentrate on having a beautiful report card.
Take part in a lot of extra-curricular activiteis(stuff like inter-school events also)-the certificates will help later on.
Take SAT-I later this year..if the results are good, then good-if not then try again.....later next year give your SAT-II.
Also prepare for the Enggineering Entrance exams, like IIT-JEE(for safety)
I think this is about all you got to do this year and next too....and believe me if you do this sincerely you won't have time for much else.
Best of Luck!!!!

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Thursday, June 12, 2003 - 09:31 am: Edit

You consider IIT JEE a safety? :) lol

By Sim98211 (Sim98211) on Thursday, June 12, 2003 - 01:35 pm: Edit

hi ppl
i am in IIT so i know.
it is far easier to get into IIT than MIT.
anyone willin to put time and effort will get thru JEE in either the first attempt or at worse the second.
to get into MIT u need something truly exceptional, like an olympiad medal. (MIT conducts Olympiad programmes for the US team so they have great regard for Olympiad medallists)
now i know the olympiad procedure in India coz i have been to Icho. i can say getting in them is a lot many times harder than getting into IIT. but if u do get something of an olympiad medal, u cud avail of MIT education with full finaid.

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Friday, June 13, 2003 - 12:24 am: Edit

I say that IIT is a safety if you are aiming for MIT 'coz I know a guy(Abhinav Kumar) who came first in the IIT-JEE and instead of going to IIT went to MIT(and now he's in Harvard)....surely he would know best!!!!

And sorry for posting teh same post twice-don't really know how I did that!

By Tangytan14 (Tangytan14) on Friday, June 13, 2003 - 02:08 am: Edit

Hey Rashmi,I had the same guy in mind when I said that olympiads do make a difference.Back in 1998 I had seen the ad of Brilliant Tutorials in which a letter of Abhinav Kumar had been published in which he had written of joining MIT.I stumbled onto his homepage this year and read his resume. He was a gold medalist in RMO and International Mathematical Olympiad as well.He had also participated in International Physics Olympiad.Do you really know this person? If yes could you please tell me how how he managed to do so many great things? Was he a real genius?

Sim98211- How did you manage to get to Icho? Please give me some advice on how to prepare for olympiads and their general level of difficulty.

SORRY FOR THE LONG POST.

By Sim98211 (Sim98211) on Friday, June 13, 2003 - 03:41 am: Edit

hi tangytan
keep 1 thing in mind: almost everyone i have known to participate in ipho, icho, ibo(intl bio oly) have done it after completing 12th grade and before joining college. even the most exceptional geniuses i have known have been unsuccesful in making it after their 11th in phy, chem and bio. and participatin in olympiad after 12th standard wont help on ur app as it wont figure on it(it will have been long dispatched by then).
the same is not true for imo. nearly everyone going for imo does so after their 11th and in exceptional cases after their 10th too. making it to imo does give u a killer edge in ur app. this is the case for abhinav kumar : 2 imos. but what counted was the imo that he attended after his 11th. now making it to any olympiad is incredibly difficult, and i wud say imo wud be the hardest of them all. there are classes that coach u for imo. these r not publicised in papers due to their exclusiveness, but u cud learn about them by contacting respectable maths teachers. the imo syllabus is in theory not too large and does not involve calculus etc. but ipho icho syllabi are huge, encompassing the entire JEE syllabus and more. since u have just completed icse, to master ipho and icho syllabi in a yr wud take something out of the normal.
now this is what i suggest: if u have r strong in maths, go for imo wholeheartedly this yr. u cud get medals at regional and national level even if u dont make it imo. meanwhile the only ppl who ever go to ipho and icho r those who study for jee, so u cud do the same and if u r deserving enough, u cud win a national medal at least after ur 11th. there is one more olympiad IOI (informatics). last yr was india's first yr at it. here is where competition and awarenes is not so strong as yet in india, so find out about it. more so there is the intl astronomy olympiad. u can only give this in ur 11th and so here is where u again stand a gr8 chance. once more competition is low and so is awareness, find the right ppl to contact and u might almost find ur self through.
if u still have doubts, email me

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Friday, June 13, 2003 - 07:27 am: Edit

Hi Tangytan
abhinav's from my town-Jamshedpur, he studied in my school-Loyola and he's the brother of my friend-Rachana......-And that's all I know about him apart from his amazing achievements. When he comes to India-I get to meet him....you know say hi-hello..but thats the end-he's too freaking intelligent-I can't have a conversation with him.

And about Olympiads...I think sim98211 has told you a lot. What I can do for you is talk to this guy in my class who attended some olympiad thing(National Level) in Mumbai this summer. On 16th my school is going to reopen and then I'll talk to him and find out stuff..ok??

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Friday, June 13, 2003 - 07:57 am: Edit

There was a girl from school who made to MIT nearly 4-5 years back.
She definitely did not write IMO etc.,but had a good/solid report card in 11th and 12th.
It helps if you are a genius;but it is not detrimental to your chances even if you don't give your olympiads.

besides, universities would prefer you to apply after receiving your ISC grades ,because that way the status is probably more complete.

Good Luck .

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Friday, June 13, 2003 - 11:20 am: Edit

Gogirl- you get your ISC results during the last week of May(usually) and if you want to apply after that-then you'll do that in November(if you want EA or ED) or in Dec for Regular Decision. And if you get selected then you'll start your college Education in Fall 2004!
What will one who follows the above procedure do between May 2003 and Fall 2004.....suck his thumb????????

So it's way better to apply before ISC.

By Tangytan14 (Tangytan14) on Friday, June 13, 2003 - 01:49 pm: Edit

I really want to thank all three of you - Sim98211,Rashmi and Gogirl.I have some good news(well it's good for me!).I have got admission in Delhi Public School,R.K.Puram,New Delhi. The list of selected candidates was posted today on their website.Anyway,I hope you have heard about it-it's considered to be a really good school.

Rashmi - Please do ask that student of your class abt how he prepared for the olympiads.I will realllly, realllly be thankful to you.
Anyway,I agree with you that waiting till the 12th results are out and then applying would really be a waste of time.

Gogirl-Thanks for the encouragement.Atleast you made me see a ray of hope in the darkness.I was beginning to think that without olympiad medals one does not even stand a chance in the race.Anyway I will be trying my luck in the olympiads this year.

Sim98211- Thanks for the great advice.I think i will stick to your advice and keep away from phy and chem olympiads this year.I am mailing you for some information on math, informatics and astronomy olympiad.Kindly mail back.

Thanks once again for all the help.
BYE!!

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Friday, June 13, 2003 - 11:26 pm: Edit

If you can't do the olympiads fine;you can concentrate on getting stellar ECs instead;which will distinguish you from other Indian students applying to MIT.

By Rashmi (Rashmi) on Saturday, June 14, 2003 - 12:19 am: Edit

tangytan-Congrats on getting into DPS RKP-I wanted to go there, but somehow never ended up applying-did'nt want to leave my town...I think and Loyola suits me just fine!!!!!

So Best of Luck in doing oneof the things which I just dreamt about.....

By Tangytan14 (Tangytan14) on Saturday, June 14, 2003 - 01:11 pm: Edit

Hi everyone!

Gogirl - Thanks for your advice! But what is exactly meant by stellar ecs?Anyway I read elsewhere that you were going to mail to this girl named Nidhi who is in MIT with 100% financial aid.I read that she had got perfect scores in sat and toefl.Did you find anything abt her?If you did, please do tell me abt it.

Rashmi - Thanks for your best wishes.Anyway right now I am quite apprehensive abt the idea of living in a hostel.Did you know that I am quite near your city, approx. 292 km from Jamshedpur? And I am waiting for your school to reopen. You promised to talk to that guy of your school, remember?
Anyway,I want to add that the last person I would want to be on this earth is your friend Rachna.Having such an exceptionally genius elder brother would be a nightmare.

Can anyone of you tell me that in college applications what are we supposed to fill in as summer jobs?Do Indian students ever do summer jobs?

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Sunday, June 15, 2003 - 12:03 am: Edit

Did not get around to emailing Nidhi;
But this year a girl from Hyderabad made it to MIT.
US citizen who most likely did not apply for financial aid;she had a 1450 in SAT1;SAT2 no idea.

Apparently,
She learnt to play the sitar and made a cd of it.
She also took up squash(a game which is hardly played when compared to Tennis) and became the state champion;in 2 years flat.

I suggest that you join a couple of clubs at school;aim to become a prefect or something for a good leadership EC.

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Sunday, June 15, 2003 - 02:07 am: Edit

My piece of advice Tangytan: pursue something that you really like with lots of effort and the ECs part would be fine.
BTW, I'm unable to understand what you people mean by 100% financial aid at MIT. I mean, MIT gives a financial aid package which is a combination of grants, loans, a student job requirement and family contribution. Everybody, by that token, gets a 100% financial aid at MIT, but its just that all 4 of these things are part of the package. Did you mean these people got in with 100% in grants?

By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Sunday, June 15, 2003 - 02:36 am: Edit

You are right,longhorn!
But they prolly mean that their NEED be it in the form of grant, work etc.,is met;while the remaining amt. could be easily afforded!

Btw,have u started ur applications,essays etc.,?

By Longhorn (Longhorn) on Sunday, June 15, 2003 - 02:43 am: Edit

nah, just prep for SAT Is. Isnt it too early for the applications and essays? colleges haven't even mailed the applications yet. True there's online apps, but I'm sorta lazy ;-)

hi this is shishir dash from loyola, jamshedpur. is rashmi in this discussion rashmi ekka? coz if she is then she got my marks wrong. not that it matters or i m annoyed or nething just that i dont want ppl to get the wrong idea, ok? i kno this is old stuff but i still want to clear the misconception
my marks r:
eng:96
maths:98
phy:98
chem:88
csc:97
and my avg is 97.25(eng+best 3)
dont worry u guys dont even need to respond to this. go on with your topic

Hi everyone!

Hey,Rashmi, where are you?Your school would have opened by now,I am waiting for you to fulfill your promise.Have you asked that guy of your school for some advice abt the olympiads?

Anyway can somebody give me the names of some good books on C++?Also can somebody give me the names of some good books of maths, chem and phy to begin with?Should I be studying just from the textbooks that have been prescribed by my school in the beginning of std.XI?

Hi...This is the first time I'm posting on this message-board. In a weeks time the BITS-Pilani list will be out and I need some advice.

I just finished my CBSE XII and scored :
Physics : 99
Chemistry : 97
Maths : 98
Comp. Sc. :98
English :90
which makes it 96.4% overall...Is this enough to get into BITS ??? Will 90 in English suffice ???

Hello everyone

... this is my first post here.

I noticed that ppl have mentioned something
about the international olympiad in
informatics here.

If you people want to know about it
the page to visit is
www.iarcs.org.in/inoi

The selection processs is 3 tiered
first there is a zonal where the questions
are relatively easy (120ish selected from
abt 2500ish this year).
Then a nationals where the questions
are still easiesh but not as easy
as the zonals and this is on a comp
not on paper (20ish selected out of
120ish)

Finally the a camp is held (in Bangalore
seemingly) where the final 4 are selected
as well as 2 standbyes.

You can have a look at the question papers
to get some idea of the ques
Mind you the camp ques are tougher
that the zonal (zio) and national (inoi)
ones.

You can have look at past ioi problems
(comparable level)

As far as training is concerned
once you have enough experience in c/c++
/pascal (you can do stuff pretty
comfortably) visit
ace.delos.com/usacogate

The maths one also follows a 3 tier process
first some 20000 ppl give it all over
the country 30 (at most 6 12thies)
are selected from each of
the 18 regions the country is divided
into on the basis of the rmo.(regional
mathematical olympiad)

These 550ish are invited to give the inmo
(Indian national mathematical olympiad)
30 are selected(again atmost 6 12thies)
form these who attend
the camp in bombay (along with 30ish or
so from previous years so in total 60)
finally 6 are selected to go to the intl
one.

preparation...... you need to know
additional things in both
for the ioi as I have said go to
ace.delos.com/usacogate
for the imo search for mo cell on google
go to the site and look up the books
.. in case you want more specific things

tell me I'll ask my roomates
(2 are inmo qualifiers and 1 is a imo 4 time
medalist.)

The problems in the ioi are algorithmic
and also require some knowledge of
general algorithms (usually not taught
in school in India)

Finally yes the ioi selection is not
as tough as the imo selection process
as it is fairly new (the imo selection
is some 15ish years old)

and these things are not age specific
you are eligible when you are in high
school (9th - 12th) so if you are good
enough you can go many times
(as my roomate has done)
infact he made the nationals in 8th
so you can give it before 9th even

for the ioi team also there was
a class 9th student this year .. unfor
tunately he broke his leg and wasnt
allowed to board the plane.I am quite
confident he and his friend (who came
6th at the camp and hence missed a
team spot)

So as you can see you can meke it earlier
than 12th and hence it can add to your
resume/college chances.
As far as 12th stuff is concerned it
can help if you want to transfer and maybe
even for grad admissions

overall neither is a very easy.(speaking of
course from the general point of view)

I dont have much idea about the ply, chem
bio and astro ones except that the
astro has some wierd rule which doesnt
allow 12thies to make the team (someone
at the ioi camp this year was a intl
asto oly medalist)

Ishan

I hope I have been of help (In case you
want to know more just ask)

calrification
general point of view > because someone like
my roomy might find the selection for the inmo and rmo comparably easy.

I am confident....that they will make the team for the next 3 years (the incompelte sentence in the my prev post..the line concerning the class 9th
ioi student)

lastly the maths thing does have classes in some places for example all the students who clear the Delhi rmo are given 4 3hr classes before the inmo (although it is supposed to aquant you in some way
not exactly train you I guess)
This is not present in Calcutta (dunno about the other places)

the traning camps are the places where all the training goes on and the selection simultaneously (but dont expect them to teach you from scratch ! but then again if you make it that far you must know something :) )

The physics, chem.bio, asto all follow similar patterns
the zonals are normally around oct to dec
the nationals feb to apr and the camps
apr to june
and the intl ones from may to sept

(I throughly recommed anyone interested in any
of the disciples math, phy, chem, bio, informaticsie programming, asto to give them as not only do they
help your college app , but more importantly you get to do higher stuff, meet new ppl form all
over India and all over the world if you make the intl one)
