they like ECs that show leadership, passion, difference making, and uniqueness. It also helps if your ECs 'fit the goals' of the university.
Examples of these ECs include:
1. Being a top shooting guard in the country/state and leading your team to a basketball title.
2. Turning an idea into a venture or startup that produces results and growth (really tough if you ask me).
3. Starting a scholarship fund and raising in excessive of $10,000.
4. Turning around your schools defunct newspaper into an 'award winning' publication.
5. Becoming a star athlete through Rudy-like determination despite your shortcomings.
6. Demonstrating your brilliance beyond the classroom by competing in prestigious competitions or doing cutting edge research in a particular field you're interested in. Hopefully, you'll be personally contributing to some sort of 'breakthrough'.
7. Forming a political oranization/leading a political movement that leads to changes in domestic or (better yet) international government policies.
8. Doing something no one thought was possible from a high school kid.
*All these examples are true and the people that accomplished them were accepted to the top universities in the country.
