How do you know MIT is 0?

How do you get this information?
By Cornellian07 (Cornellian07) on Friday, May 09, 2003 - 10:01 pm: Edit
And also, do you know of Cornell's waitlist numbers? I have a few friends who were waitlisted there, and I wanna know what the chances are for them to join me next year.
By Dream5 (Dream5) on Friday, May 09, 2003 - 11:11 pm: Edit
Where did you get that number? When I called them today, they said they don't know yet. How do you know??
By Rob (Rob) on Friday, May 09, 2003 - 11:15 pm: Edit
these are not official- you can't get "official" numbers, and definitely not from an admissions officer. HOWEVER, they are being reported by a reputable source (except duke and mit of course), and just trust me on this. of course, you don't have to but it really doesnt matter to me- i'm just trying to help people out. also keep in mind these are early estimates. sorry, haven't heard about cornell
By Thisistrue (Thisistrue) on Saturday, May 10, 2003 - 12:26 am: Edit
I don't care whether that number is official.
Are you sure that no one is being taken off the waitlist?
By Rob (Rob) on Saturday, May 10, 2003 - 01:13 am: Edit
as i said, the mit number was reported by anotherdad, so go ask him. the other's are from my source.

MIT
My apologies to everyone about MIT. I was passing along something from other postings on CC and it might have not been accurate. I retract the earlier statement. I have received an email from someone who says he called MIT on May 9 and was told that they did not know yet how many might be taken off the wait list.

some called the office of admissions at duke?
By Rob (Rob) on Saturday, May 10, 2003 - 03:52 pm: Edit
TRUST ME on the other numbers, including duke. my friend was accepted of the wl may 8th. send any extra essays/recs in RIGHT NOW, and contact your regional rep to tell him/her how much and why you want to attend duke.

Rob, Where did you get the info about Stanford's waiting list?
By Bangaloreboy (Bangaloreboy) on Sunday, May 11, 2003 - 04:13 am: Edit
One of guy from India got off the Stanford waitlist.
By Anotherdad (Anotherdad) on Sunday, May 11, 2003 - 10:10 pm: Edit
Something solid about MIT from Anothermom (no relation)
My child attends classes at MIT through the High School Studies Program, and we typically pick up a copy of "The Tech", the student newspaper. The May 9th edition had an article entitled "Class of 2007 Exceeds Size Goal, May Grow." In the body of the article an associate Director of Admission is quoted as saying they "...will not need to use the waitlist much this year." The target size for the class is 1000, and so far 1023 have accepted. I don't mean to disappoint anyone, but I thought the info might be useful.
By Rob (Rob) on Monday, May 12, 2003 - 02:02 pm: Edit
I have personal confirmation now. MIT is indeed over-enrolled and will NOT use the wl this year.

any numbers for Caltech or ND?
By Arcadia (Arcadia) on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 - 09:25 am: Edit
Just heard that Middlebury will not be going to the waitlist this year.
By Anotherdad (Anotherdad) on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 - 10:51 am: Edit
Ouch! I was thinking that it might be a very active year for waitlists because of the multiple applications and poor economy. The report from MIT, and Middlebury, and Rob's report of some rather low numbers perhaps suggest otherwise. Does anyone have any sense of the overall trend yet?
And anything on Barnard?
I have just heard of someone coming off Wesleyan's list.

Congratulations Calguy, you said that you always wanted to go to Stanford. Sometimes things do work out given time.
By Calguy (Calguy) on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 - 01:17 pm: Edit
Did not get info on where to send deposits. They called 3 times, tried to track me down on my cell, but would not leave message other than to call or they would call back.
Stats 1570 SAT (800 V, 770 M), 800 (writing), 790, 760 SAT 2, Natl Merit Scholar, AMC Math top 1%, lots of APs, 4.0 uw GPA, 4 yr varsity soccer, senior captain- not recruited, ECs student government, decent essay .
Got into Williams, Cornell, Northwestern, Amherst, Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, waitlisted Stanford, Penn, Princeton. Turned down by Harvard, Brown, Yale. Was leaning to Williams till the waitlist came in.
By Sopranosmom (Sopranosmom) on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 - 01:29 pm: Edit
Don't rule out Williams! My son is a senior there and wants another 4 years. He absolutely loves it!!! Great professors, great friends, great sports - he was varsity swim captain this year -- please feel free to ask me (or him) any questions!

Calguy:
My daughter has stats very similar to yours. She went to Stanford admit weekend and came back happy that she is going there. It's a great place for everything, including science and engineering. She met a lot of really wonderful students and prospective freshmen. She feels that she belongs there. I am sure that's how you would feel too.
By Howdydoody (Howdydoody) on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 - 02:33 pm: Edit
Calguy,
Congrats again! Can I ask what you did toward getting off the waitlist? Any tips? Also, are you a legacy or URM (you said you were not recruited, so I assume no to athlete)? You are obviously qualified, but I was wondering if you also fit into one of their "niche" areas because it seems as though they don't necessarily take the best candidates off the waitlist first (although you are clearly one of those best
), but instead accept people who fit into an area in which they were lacking previously.
By Calguy (Calguy) on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 - 02:40 pm: Edit
Non legacy, non URM, white suburban male. I wrote a letter and submitted a short film clip that I did for a pre prom no drinking campaign. I do live 20 min from Stanford, maybe they needed a local guy. Absolutely no affiliation with anyone at the University though.

Rob..what's the rumors and confusing situation about harvard
By Rob (Rob) on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 - 10:48 pm: Edit
this is from the pr board:
1. a regional rep and a senior admission officer both made statements to students indicating that deliberations were ongoing and the process would take a couple more weeks atleast
2. another regional rep said less than 10 people would be taken off of the waitlist, conflicting all other reports of 25-35 slots being open
3. receptionist said all waitlist decisions have been made and all letters were mailed today, but that those accepted would not be getting called
4. a poster claims to go to a school where 2 people were accepted today- one a basketball player, the other a legacy, both with low stats (1200 sat's)
5. another poster in canada said a guy at his school was called today for acceptance, and he also had low stats but was a crew champion
6. another guy said his friend was called monday and accepted
7. another guy says he got a letter monday saying more information would come

By Cruelfate (Cruelfate) on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 10:15 pm: Edit
I'm affraid I did nothing... I refused to send more information because of all the essays and things... I decided that if they want me, they will answer me... and they did.. here is the important part of the letter:
"Dear XXX:
We appreciate your patience during the past several weeks. As you know, the admissions Committee had hoped to offer you freshman admission from the Waiting List for Fall 2003. Unfortunately, it is now clear that we will be unable to do so. We would however, like to offer you the guarantee of transfer asmission to Cornell for Fall 2004 as a sophomore in the Biometry and Statistics major.
In the selection process we consider all aspects of each student's record. We felt that your interests and experiences are a particularly good match for the College of Agricultural and Life Scineces. It is your "appropriateness" and academic promise which has prompted us to offer you the possibility of transfer admission to the College one year from now.
...."
any other questions?

IM SOO CONFUSED.
IM WAITLISTED AT SMITH COLLEGE.
THEY HAVEN'T SENT ME ANY DECISION YET, BUT THEY SENT ME THEIR ACADEMIC CATALOGUE TODAY BY MAIL, WITH NO LETTER.
COULD THIS MEAN THAT THEY HAVE ACCEPTED ME?
I don't know why they sent it to me after may 1st then.
By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Saturday, May 24, 2003 - 01:38 pm: Edit
Emory sent me their academic catalogue in May too, two weeks after I told them I wasn't going to attend their school. They also keep asking me for financial aid documentation. I don't know if that helps you or not Good Gal.

Good Gal -- I applied to 17 schools and even though it's after May 1 and I submitted my deposit to only one school, I still keep getting snail mail and e-mail from about 8 other schools that I have no interest in.

u received the catalogues from places that ACCEPTED u.

"Quarky, ur getting mail from those 8 skools cuz they accepted u.
in my case, these ppl have waitlisted me, not accepted."
I know, I am not stupid.
"u received the catalogues from places that ACCEPTED u.
right?"
Yes, but in my case I can also say that I have received catalogs from places that I APPLIED TO. And, of course, I am sure you already know that yourself, I recieved way more mail from schools I never applied for than from those I did apply to.
In any case, it is impossible to make a prediction at this point, since your school may still be sending you mail even if they don't know whether or not u have been accepted.
"high chance that they have taken me." Sorry, but I definitely wouldn't be so confident if I were you. Acceptance letters usually come in as soon as a decision is made, so I am pretty sure that the catalog was mailed before the school made its decision. Otherwise, you would already know if you're in. Does that make sense?
By Good_Gal (Good_Gal) on Saturday, May 24, 2003 - 11:31 pm: Edit
I'm not confident. just hopeful.
if they sent it to all the students who applied, wouldn't that be before the may 1st deadline?
By Harvardguy (Harvardguy) on Saturday, May 24, 2003 - 11:59 pm: Edit
Forget about Smith College, Good Gal. Harvard is a great school and it's in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is one of the best Ivy League schools. Trust me, it's a better school than Smith College. It not only has national reputation but also is internationally known. I suggest that you apply to Harvard and forget about Smith College. If you are not convinced about excellence of Harvard University you can visit their website at www.harvard.edu. You may think that I am biased, since I am a Harvard student myself. But being a Harvard student, I like to encourage people to apply to Harvard. Trust me, it’s an awesome school!
By Gnatcire (Gnatcire) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 02:21 am: Edit
Yes, I was accepted at Emory, but what I was trying to say is that they sent me a catalogue even though it was unnecessary. Perhaps they sent catalogues to all the people that were accepted and waitlisted. Harvardguy, if your arrogance weren't in the way, you wouldn't have misread GoodGal's messages. She got waitlisted, so she's already applied to schools and she can't apply to Harvard now.
By Good_Gal (Good_Gal) on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 04:29 am: Edit
If they sent the catalogue to whoever applied to smith, then wouldn't I have received it before may 1st?they reject ppl in march/april, so why would they send the catalogue to those rejected ppl in may? wondering.

Good Gal,
Because you are India, there is a possibility that wait list news from Smith could get lost in the mail. I would advise you to send an email explaining that you are eager to attend Smith, have been waiting, and then provide alternative methods to contact you if a decision is made. Ask if they can confirm the receipt of the email.

Good Gal,
After your next contacts with Smith, you will just need to sit back and wait for whatever happens. Also, begin the process of adjusting to life at Rochester, which is a fine school. Although you may get into Smith still, odds of coming off waiting lists are never good, and therefore you should focus on building your future at Rochester.

On May 20th, I called Cornell and they said they were not taking anyone off the waitlist for Fall 2003 (at least for the college of arts and science). The next day, I received a letter that they could not offer me admission this year but I was guaranteed tranfer for fall of 2004 as long as I had at least 3.0 GPA. I think some people on the waitlist are guaranteed transfer for Jan. 2003. I don't know if any other college treats the waitlist like this, but it is an interesting offer in case I don't like my school after 1 year.
By Good_Gal (Good_Gal) on Wednesday, May 28, 2003 - 12:26 pm: Edit
Well, I called Smith and expressed how much I want to go there.
I was upset about the catalogue, because they said they sent it to me by 'mistake'!
They said they send it to students who ask for it only, not even all accepted students.
They said sorry, but I feel horrible.
Why did this mistake have to happen with me?
They said they'll contact me as soon as they can take me off the waitlist.
By Quarky (Quarky) on Wednesday, May 28, 2003 - 02:33 pm: Edit
Don't complain. This is exactly why I and others told you not to hope for anything. Receiving a catalog is rarely an accurate indicator of your chances.
By Good_Gal (Good_Gal) on Wednesday, May 28, 2003 - 02:37 pm: Edit
well, they had no right to send it to me by MISTAKE, as they put it.
I never asked for it.
it is only supposed to reach those who ask 4 it.

Hey!
I've been placed on the Dartmouth waiting list and STILL haven't heard anything from them yet. I've kept in touch with them and the last I heard from them was that they'd inform me of my decision by 1st of July. Its the 7th of July now!
