By Beenthereil (Beenthereil) on Monday, May 05, 2003 - 11:50 am: Edit

While I have only recently been watching these boards, it seems that fully 90% of the outstanding scores in SAT and ACT tests and gpa's and class rankings are from posters who have band and Mathletes and chess as their ec's.

What happened to the student/athletes in basketball, football and baseball?

By Yourlocalmayor (Yourlocalmayor) on Monday, May 05, 2003 - 12:24 pm: Edit

1370 SAT

no class ranking at my high school

3.7ish gpa, i don't remember exactly b/c i don't care

I played basketball for 4 years, soccer 2 years, and 1 year of cross-country. 2 years of AAU basketball--we won the National Championship once, 3rd place the next year, 2 state AAU titles, won some crappy national invitational tournament, etc. blah, basketball is just fun, and we had about 3-5 other players on the various teams with 1200-1400 SAT's, so don't start saying all athletes are stupid.

though i hung out with all the nerds at my city's math club. what a contrast.

I want a band geek red-haired/hot chick as a g/f. and to quote jim from american pie 2:
"I just never joined the band."

Your...You COMPLETELY misread the tone of my post.

I said nothing and inferred nothing about athletes being "stupid". I was just hoping to find a few that post on this site.

Since I've only been on this board a couple of weeks, I've noticed a majority (a large majority) of the posters are band members and mathletes and chess club members.

Nice to hear from you.

My son is also an outstanding student and an outstanding athlete.

When I posted some questions about his "worrying" about admissions based on many of these band and mathlete posters, I was deleted.

It is a valuable site nonetheless.

I think there are a lot of helpful posters
when it come's to student athletes on this board.
Maybe you should try a different subject title.
My son is valadictorian, 4.0 GPA unweighted all honors and AP classes. Numerous awards and district pick in athletics. 3 year's starting V football, 3 years V Powerlifting, and 3 years V track. Highly recruited athlete.
Do you have questions that relate to the student Athlete?

Beenthereil, did you not put your original post on the Chances Board? If so Admin deleted it because it was off topic: it probably would have been better in College Admissions.

ftball...Was looking to see if any athletes post on this board. I am familiar with the Clearinghouse and scholarships for D1 athletes.

I provided specific grade, test score information, etc., and asked if my son should "worry" about being admitted to many of the colleges that so many on this site would like to get into, based on so many people posting with 1550's, a ton of EC's, etc., and inquiring if they would be "admitted" into x, y and z college or university.

No, Jenniferpa, the Admin says that they didn't delete it, but someone did.

We're from Illinois and it looks like he wants to go South or West. He has the grades and test scores for the schools in which he has substantial interest. Thanks.

I seem to remember the gist of your question related to people telling you to worry, that there are no sure things. Is that right? I vaguely remember posting something on the lines that although he's certainly in a good position, college admissions can be very uncertain, and to make sure that he had a least 1 safety school. I also seem to remember warning you that although lots of coaches might want him, they don't always have the power they think they have. After all, it's easy for them say how wonderful he is and how much they'd like him, and how he'd be a shoo in that whichever school they're representing, but they arn't the ones doing the admitting, or the ones who are confronted with the "thin envelope". Oh, and I also remember suggesting you find a school where his althletic ability isn't an important issue, just in case he's injured (god forbid).

Hi, I am a parent of a junior daughter who is involved in sports heavily as well...three seasons...soccer, alpine ski racing, and tennis teams. She also is deeply involved in performing arts....studies two instruments, band, jazz band, wind ensemble, jazz and hip hop dance, tap dance repertory group, and student government. Like your child, she is first in her class with the hardest most demanding courseload in our school with straight As. It makes for a busy life. Not all the top students are of one sort.

If ya wanna talk sports parent stuff....I wear that hat too.
Susan
