What is the criteria for race on a college application? If my Great-grandmother is Native American, does that let me check the Native American box on my application? I want to be honest, but I don't want to shortchange myself.

I was eligible for a Hispanic scholarship dealy as long as I was at least 25%, so, as far as I know, you should be 25%. Maybe check more than one box if allowed or fill in other.

Check native american, you will get ALOT of preference. Native americans need it though, they live on their own reservations and stuff, kinda sucks from a Native's point of view.
My friend made it into Stanford with a 25 ACT, but he ended up going to Cornell!! WHOOHOOO!!
=)

I agree that I will get alot of preference. However, I just wonder where the line is ethically. My Birth Certificate says I'm white. I don't live on a reservation, etc. I don't want to take a slot that rightfully belongs to someone who does. However, if I am entitled to claim it, I certainly will.

Its just your great grandmother? that means you're 1/8 native american, I would checkmark native american and white if you can do more than one.

You should have tribal enrollment to claim NA status. I heard some schools actually call you on that because it is the easiest URM to prove. That card is not easy to get, either. You have to trace your roots back to about a five year period and then that in itself is still sometimes not enough. Which tribe? Obviously you do not consider yourself to be a NA, and 1/8 is a pretty small percentage. I would be wary.
