Suppose you live in the same city or within a very short distance to a top school. Assuming you also have decent stats, can that help at all in admission? Do the top schools care about having some people from the area?

Rumor has it that Cornell might do this, but absolutely not any other Ivies.

i dont think that really matters. but just keep in mind that the ivies usually want diversity.

Harvard, UPenn...they say so in some of their admissions literature and through historical prefeences (Harvard for those residing in Boston and have socioeconomic hardship; UPenn for underpriviledged kids from Philly).

hmm that's not really true. i know kids who live in cambridge and there school sends quite a high number of students to harvard, even though it's just a typical public school. I know of a girl from cambridge who is at harvard but didn't get into any of the other ivies.
