College Discussion Forums: College Search and Selection: What if....

What if I apply ED to say... Cornell. I get accepted BUT I GET A TERRIBLE FINANCIAL AID PACKAGE... I mean, one which there's no way I could pay. I would have to turn it down certainly...
Now, could I apply easily to other universities in regular application? Will I be banned? Harvard says that anyone with an acceptance from another university on ED must immediately withdraw their application.

Please help...

The point of ED is that you do not turn it down. This is why you only apply ED if you are sure you can afford to accept any fin aid package they give you.
If you commit to a school and then break that commitment, your name will be made known to other schools which are very likely to not want you as a student when they find out.
So, my advice is: either apply EA somewhere or wait to apply regular.

There was a huge discussion of ED on the Parents forum not long ago. I'm sure you could find it with a search. It's got a lot of good info and discussion.

Anybody agrees with Esmeralda?

I agree with Esmeralda. Unless a university promises to meet an applicants financial needs, one must not apply ED unless he/she can afford the tuition. When one applies ED, he/she is asking the university to give her/him preferential treatment over other applicants and in return, he/she promises to join if accepted. That is why the acceptance rate for ED applicants is about twice as high as that for regular applicants.
