So, I have alot of family in NYC, and I moved to Texas about 6 years ago and vowed to go back for college because I missed it so much, but RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) is offering me $15,000 a year for all four years while NYU is only offering $6,000 for all four years. They just upped the tuition at NYU to $40,000 and that's something that kind of makes me wary to go. I got accepted to both the photography programs at the schools. When I was applying, I thought NYU would be my top choice and I'd definitely go if I got in, but now I'm wary that I migh just be going there for the name! please help
LOLA

Keepaustinweird,

While you and your family must make the same decision we are facing, it is a difficult decision you and your family must make. However, I am no authority on photography programs. So, I can't answer specifically to their photography programs. You may want to refer to the Parents Forum where I asked the Question "Is NYU worth the cost?", one of the responses was pro NYU and one against paying the cost to attend NYU. The responses give one pause for thought. Good Luck to you in your decision.

I was a student at RIT majoring in engineering.(withdrew to change my major..I will be going to Cooper Union for the school of art class 2007). During my senior year at high school, i did some research on RIT. As you may seen informed, RIT was ranked number one for photography a couple years ago (not sure what's its rank now). Now, NYU is a very prestigious school. Their academic programs are excellent regardless my lack of knowdledge about their photography program. But let me add this briefly, you would not choose Harvard over The Art Institute of Chicago if you are applying as an artist. Unless you are looking for a strong background outside your field. I am not saying that RIT is not a good school. As a matter of fact, it is one of the best schools in the country without a PH.D . My best recommendation is to choose RIT not because I attended there, but because it is undeniable known for its great photography program, something that photography-related companies will pay attention to(you may also want to check if they offered co-op in your field of interest since they offer at others). NYU is highly known for its other majors (as I said before, I don't know their reputation in photography). Hope I have made any contribution to your concern and wish you good luck in your decision.

I'd just like to concur with Josz. RIT's photography is second to none. NYU is known mainly for liberal arts and business. If you are sure that you want to major in photography, RIT is the place to go.
