I have my final list of colleges to apply to with a major as fine arts or design. But I want to add one more from this pile, just for the heck of it, which one of these 4 would you vote for taking into consideration their design or arts program?
Don't base it on if I can get in. Just VOTE
A. Carnegie Mellon
B. U of Michigan Ann Arbor
C. Boston University
D. University of Pennsylvania

In short Liek, you have three good choices and a dud! LOL We all picked CMU, Michigan and Penn about evenly.
In actuality, CMU is the best of the three in the Fine Arts. It is not even close. CMU is awesome whereas Michigand and Penn are good but not great. However, Penn and Michigan are slightly more prestigious and a little better in terms of overall academic and social offerings.
It boils down to what you really want.
And Kk, you traitor! I don't care if you come from the city of Brotherly Bloody Love, you are now in the Big 10. You are supposed to recommend the Big 10 over the Ivy League! LOL

i was leaning towards michigan and cmu, it's funny how no one has said bu.
i like cmu, i know it has the best program from all three, but like i've heard that cmu students are too busy with their studies and like it seems like cmu won't have a life, and that people are shy too.
i like michigan, because i think it would give me a whole overall typical college experience, and of course it's a great school but something about not being in a real big city i dont like, wait is ann arbor a big city?
Penn I was just looking at it yesterday and I like the fact how it has the city, the program, and the financial aid! I'm needy! also of course how many people can say I got into U Penn
By the way, if you wanna know what the other schools I'm applying to are, UCLA USC Parsons Pratt FIT OTIS CSULB and one other school
so how about we narrow it down to CMU, PENN, or Michigan??

I'm also gay, maybe that will help, which one is gay friendlier from cmu penn or michigan
By Kk19131 (Kk19131) on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 - 03:11 pm: Edit
Penn is quite gay friendly (City of Brotherly Love, hehe); Mellon (in my opnion) is not a very "student friendly" school, that is, the social atmosphere there is not the best.
Have you looked at RISD? What kind of design do you plan to study?
By Alexandre (Alexandre) on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 - 04:01 pm: Edit
Most good universities in have a pretty open gay community. Ann Arbor is certainly quite liberal. It is actually one of the best places for Lesbians to live.
By Liek0806 (Liek0806) on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 - 05:20 pm: Edit
fashiong design, graphic design, or fine arts, i have looked at RISD, i would apply but i don't think i would actually want to pay to go there since risd doesn't meet a great amount of the need,
and the only reason i'm applying to the other design/art schools is because i would actually pay to be there and because they are in ny and in la

Ann Arbor is just one hell of a city, my votes in for Umich. My neighbor goes to CMU and says it's filled with dorks (she's majoring in CS)....and Penn is just the Ivy that everyone makes fun of where i live.

seeing this article HOTTEST FOR GETTING A JOB
Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Hands-on experience is a key part of life at Carnegie Mellon, says Michael Steidel, director of admissions. The 1,360 students in the freshman class apply to one of the school's 12 programs; computer science, engineering and drama are most popular. The school takes pride in being on the cutting edge in every field and encourages students to think about applying what they learn to the real world. "We start working with students as freshmen to get them thinking about what's possible in terms of what your education can do," Steidel says. That approach seems to be paying off both in the number of applications (they've more than doubled in the last decade) and in the value of a Carnegie Mellon degree: about 70 percent of students have a job offer when they graduate (an additional 30 percent go right to graduate school).http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5626574/site/newsweek/
I'm leaning towards carnegie,

Liek, why don't you apply to Michigan and Carnegie Mellon and take your time to decide.
By Liek0806 (Liek0806) on Saturday, August 21, 2004 - 02:35 pm: Edit
I choose Carnegie! Thanks guys for your help, for some reason I concluded Michigan isn't right, oh it's because I think for the cost of going to Michigan I rather apply to a Private school, and because I don't think Michigan are as generous with financial aid as would be Carnegie for out of staters. That and because I think it would be easier to get into Carnegie, then Michigan out of state. I really like Carnegie now, I hope I get in, Carnegie has become top of my list!

Good luck to you Liek. CMU is a great university.
By Mom102 (Mom102) on Saturday, August 21, 2004 - 03:19 pm: Edit
LIEK, if you are into graphic design or art and are financially in need, consider Mass College of art and Virginia Commonwealth University.
Both have highly rated art and design programs and both are very inexpensive. Mass Art is around $5,000 per year even for out of state folks. VCU is around $12,000. This is all plus room and board.
SUNY at Puchase isn't too bad either.
VCU by the way is better ranked then Carnegie Melon in Graphic Design.

lol, thanks mom102, i appreciate your concern but for now i think i have a huge list now that i need to start working on,
but yes hopefully i will see you jase, the more i find out ab out it the more i like it, i hope cmu takes me and gives me a great financial aid package!

Our friend who will be a sophmore at CMU says the atmo is decidedly techie/geeky. But I'm sure he is not taking any arts classes.
FYI, some good area LAC's have cross reg priv's at RISD.

Liek0806-
The most important thing is to find the best "fit" for you. Everyone will be full of opinions about one school or another. What is great for one student won't be great for another.
My S is fortunate that he picked the best
"fit" for him and he is incredibly happy. It just happened to turn out that CMU was the best for his needs. He is in the college of Fine Arts.
By Liek0806 (Liek0806) on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 01:32 pm: Edit
Wct, was it tough for h im to get into the college of fine arts? What was his portfolio like?
By Wct (Wct) on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 03:09 pm: Edit
Liek0806-
My S is a BFA acting major in the CFA. He had to audition to be accepted. They only take 18 BFA acting majors a year and 10 Musical Theater majors. It is very competitive.
By Liek0806 (Liek0806) on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 09:04 pm: Edit
sorry, i had thought college of fine arts was the arts major, but well at least i know the design major is easier than the theatre, cmu says they receive 300 applicants for 45 spaces and they usually accept 66 percent more than the spaces available since their enrolling rate is around 30 percent which isn't as bad its li ke 160 out of 300 accepted
