I know that sometimes for an otherwise ordinary student to stand out, a somewhat risky essay may be in order. My question is this: for a student who is at the median of the schools latest class, is it better to write a safe essay, or should the student write a more risky essay that is equally well-written? I’m in this position, and don’t want to feel like I’m going to ruin my chances by playing it safe, but at the same time am worried about maybe having a risky essay be poorly received. What should I do?

Here are my stats and the schools I’m applying to if that helps at all:

You don't need to write any particular kind of essay, but it should certainly be well written and give the adcom a good deal of insight into who you are, what has driven you, moved you, etc. The main thing is, write candidly and don't be mundane; Then you will stand out. Hope that helps. :)
