I'm so confused about what schools I should be looking at. My stats are terrible in comparison to most of the CC posters, but I figured I'd give this a try anyway.

SAT 1270
660 Verbal
610 Math

ACT composite 26

GPA
Unweighted 3.64/4.0 (approx)
Weighted 9.78/10
Rank 25/491 (weighted)
Have taken 3 AP classes, still don't have scores from those tests. Heavy courseload including mostly honors classes, with all others college prep.

EC's
photo editor of the school paper since soph-senior years (can't be editor before then)
student council general board soph-senior years
Girl Scouts 5-12 grades
NHS junior and senior year (not eligible before junior year)
National Youth Leadeship Forum on Medicine summer 2003
HOBY 9-10

Awards
2 from national Latin exams
NHS
Latin Honor Society

I'm not sure what I want to major in. Have considered bio/premed, but am no longer sure about that. Also considering elementary education, very seriously, but still very unsure. Live in NH, looking for a school in the Northeast, but doesn't have to be New England. Am considering Pennsylvania, and possibly northern Virginia.

Are any schools good safeties, matches, etc for someone like me?

Compared to the vast majority of people out there your stats are by no means "terrible" (plus you might try retaking them, I got a hundred points higher on my SATs then I had on any practice test so you never know)

I would recommend looking at:
UMass-Amherst
Boston University
(For bigger schools)
Skidmore
Trinity
Franklin & Marshall
Gettysburg
(for smaller schools)

ON a separate note: Why only limit yourself to that section of the country, I realize you might have an affection for long cold winters, but checking out a wider spread of schools can be a very interesting thing to do.

I'm limiting myself to this part of the country because I want to be able to get home easily if I decide I need to, and I can't afford to fly all the time. In fact I would probably have to drive whereever I go, so I'm trying to keep it to an 8-10 hour drive. I would love to go to school on the west coast, but it's not realistic.

Northeastern (a school on the rise).

don't worry, i felt intimidated by cc too. you should be proud of what you've achieved and be comfortable posting any questions you may have. i don't think you should automatically reject a school just because of your grades. save a space or two for your favorite schools. college admissions is difficult and unpredicable. it's better to take a chance than to regret later not taking one.
what do you like, lacs or doctorals? small, medium, large? competitive? conservative or very liberal?
here are just some of my suggestions for you:
haverford, bowdoin, boston u, syracuse, ursinus, connecticut, u of vermont, u of nh, and suny albany (reach- safety). i recommend these schools for everyone- carleton, grinnell, and u of chicago. usually 5-8 schools are sufficient. on usnews.com you can get a list of schools within a 8-10 hr drive (about 400 miles) by entering your zip code.

Your stats are better than you give yourself credit for. Franklin & Marshall, Allegheny, Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell, Gettysburg, Bryn Mawr, Hobart & William Smith, Bard, Hamilton... If you want to be a teacher, your choices of LACs may be more limited because many don't offer the courses you need to get certified. That's not all bad - there are so many to choose from. If you want a big school, Penn State, Delaware, Maryland.

Monarchs fan, would you be from NH? Manchester specifically? I'm from Hudson.

By Monarchsfan16 (Monarchsfan16) on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 - 02:36 pm: Edit

Ejpowers, yeah I'm from one of those tiny towns that border Manchester.
And thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'll have to look into the schools I hadn't heard of before.

Northeastern is rated by US NEws as a tier 3 school. It has no where to go but up. If you look at profs with terminal drgrees, grad rates, peer assessment, it is weak. Alan hypes and pumps NEU on every post. If you want to see it check out everyone of his posts, they all hype NEU.

Are there schools that offer courses in modelling?

By Jamimom (Jamimom) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 12:09 am: Edit

Take a look at the list of colleges on the Parents forum for 1100 SAT and C student. Those can comprise your list too, along with many state schools. Your rank/scores are just fine for schools like Penn State, UMD College Pk and U Del which many kids really want, not to mention any of the New England state schools. Some may have reciprocal or reduced tuition arrangements with NH. Your stats are well above average, and you will be a much sought after candidate at more than 95% of the colleges in this country. Things just start getting tight at the top 50 schools or so and that is why those who are candidates for them ruminate so much about them. For those schools it is pretty much a crap shoot for many kids, especially as you move up the selectivity scale. But you have to keep in mind that this is a small minority of schools that have so many kids applying to them which is creating this hype.
