I know most of the posts on this board refer to undergraduate admissions but thought I'd post this anyway. I'm currently attending a Northern California community college which I'll graduate from next semester with my associates degree in English. Then I'm planning to transfer to Chico State as it's the closest and cheapest option and with two disabled parents, neither who can work anymore, it's the only option. There I plan to major in English Education before getting my single subject teaching credential. At some point though, I'd also like to get a masters degree in English. The problem is that it seems like most English graduate programs don't have a program leading to a terminal MA degree but only offer their MA's to students continuing on for the Phd, which I'm not at all sure I'm interested in at this time. So I guess my question is, does anyone know of a good terminal masters program in English?

I'm looking for schools with a terminal MA also, which schools have you seen that only offer MAs to future Phds? Sorry I can't be any help, but I've just started researching this myself.

Most of the ones I can remember checking out where it didn't look as if they had an MA, except as part of the Phd program were the UC's (with the exception of Irvine which offers a summer masters in English aimed at teachers, something I stumbled upon last night and might consider), Yale, Harvard and Stanford. I checked some others but I don't remember them all. I should have made a list. As for schools that did offer terminal masters programs in English, I've now identified the following:
UC Irvine's summer masters in English (mentioned above)
Purdue University (seems to have an array of concentrations as well)
Most of the CSU's

That nixes all of the colleges I was looking at! Well maybe I could *say* that I'm planning on pursuing a phd, and just stop after the masters. I don't know, do you think that would work? Oxford offers a terminal MA in a 1 year program, that's what I'm crossing my fingers for! Thanks for letting me in on your research

No problem. I thought about doing that too but I'm not sure how well it would work. In any case, thanks for telling me about Oxford. It's great if we can keep posting the results of our research.

For terminal masters degrees, try the Cal States.
I know, for example, that San Francisco State and Cal STate Fullerton both offer an MA in English. So, for that matter, does Chico state and I'm sure others do as well. A nice benefit of attending a cal state is the opportunity to work on your teaching credential at the same time, rather than doing two separate programs. Good luck. www.calstate.edu

How does that work out, working on a teaching credential at the same time? I'm planning to transfer to a CSU (Chico) next spring to complete my undergrad and then get my single subject credential. What you're saying is that I could pursue my masters in English at the same time? Do you know how that works (Does it add more time to getting the degree and credential, etc)?
