Hey, I've been looking into Syracuse University in up-state New York and wondering what up-state NY is like. From what I have seen (on-line) Syracuse seems like a beautiful college and I am going to visit next month. I have heard that up-state NY is really trashy though. Is this true? Also, I heard that Syracuse has a bunch of snobby Jewish kids. I don't have anything against Jewish people, but snobby people are annoying. And response would be great.

All colleges have a mix of students who are both nice and Irritating.

The city of Syracuse is not that great to be honest. The university has some nice quaint shops and restaurants on campus or near campus. However, we were just there this summer for their pre-college program in art. There was a lot of construction going on, and the campus isn't that great looking.

Some of their programs, however, are excellent. Those that are exemplary are: Communication, public policy and school of visual and performing art. I don't know much about the other programs.

What else can I answer for you?

I was just wondering about the city in general; I've heard its the ghetto. I see what you mean about the student body but I don't really think im going to apply or visit. I want to major in history/poli sci and do pre-law and for those things Syracuse is pretty average. Also, I live in NH so it would be a 8 hour drive there, which is not worth it to me.

I have been to both Syracuse (yrs. ago) and Rochester, NY and I wasn't too impressed. Cities seemed to be struggling. However, most of the surrounding areas (within a 15 minute ride) and you are out in very rural areas! At least that's what most of upstate NY seems like to me, small cities that may be struggling & very rural otherwise.
Have not been to Buffalo, so that might be a better town.

Syracuse is not a great city. It is cold, and I have found the people to be cold both literally and emotionally. If you like what the university offers then its a great place for you. Other than the university, If I had to live in Syracuse, I would wonder what sin I violated in my life.

Try Saratoga Springs (Skidmore). It is a fabulous Upstate town.
