My mind is apparently blanking on good school with a strong English department. Right now, according to my brain, I know only of Berkeley, which can't be right. What other schools are there with awesome English departments?
Right now I'm just looking for schools, out of state (I'm in California) or in-state, or even out of country. Something that doesn't have a huge impersonal campus (or a smallish number of students per course; less than 30 would be nice).
Thank you for your help!

Virginia has a good English department and is not huge.

Add Carleton, Vassar, Knox, Occidental and Skidmore.

Skidmore has a truly stellar English department. Many of the professors are both accessible and nurturing, as well as well-published, and the College has a connection to the world-famous Yaddo in Saratoga Springs. For a small school, the program is hard to beat.
