hmmm..
I checked the UIUC website, and find out how much money UIUC engineers make!
I was quite disapointed

Average First-Year Salary
B.S. $4,000
M.S. $5,000
Ph.D. $7,000

That might be the amount above the national average they make. Nobody makes that little money unless they're working part-time in a convenience store.

sorry....
It's suppose to be

B.S. $40,000
M.S. $50,000
Ph.D. $70,000

You sound like my son!

I think first year salaries for most professions are not indicative of later salaries. Teachers start in the high 20s but average in US is mid40s(this is 9 month work, remember)And there are school administrators making upwards of 200,000.

But those admins most likely started in the 20s years back

My son will be attending UIUC this fall and plans to attain CISCO and some other certifications through the local community college here while pursuing his CS degree. He has 6 hrs of CISCO and 8 hrs of computer animation already through Parkland. There are several U of I students in his classes

He seems to think this will make him more marketable and has wonderful visions of big money, but, guys, the economy sucks right now!!!!!

I try to tell him not to get his hopes too high as I hate to see him disappointed

You might want to look over Parkland's website and see if this is something that would interest you should you end up here!

I also wonder if midwest grads are more likely to settle in the midwest while those on the coasts settle on the coasts-that would make for a huge difference in reported salaries acc/to area's cost of living

Not sure which figures from the site you saw as that may possibly be averages nationwide and not UI, or perhaps a few years old, because for 2002 graduates the site is showing average starting salaries of about $49,000 for BS, $58,000 for MS, and $84,000 for PhD. (Those are averages for all disciplines combined with some areas going much higher)

$70,000 a year as a starting salary is DAMN good.

if that's not enough, you can always supplement your income, even out of your one-room apartment, by putting little tiny ads in great big newspapers.
