Goodness, what are you doing in OK? I see that you prefer the East and South - but they have a lot of schools. Give us a little more info - what are you thinking of majoring - and what is your class rank like? Would Ohio or Michigan be alright?

By Yackityack (Yackityack) on Thursday, June 24, 2004 - 10:41 pm: Edit

hey i got a 1350 too. small world....

By Thekev (Thekev) on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 12:54 pm: Edit

Thanks-
I like Cincy and Cleveland but I would prefer a bit further east. Michigan is super but i don't think its for me.

Major: Political Sci., Economics maybe History
Size: Not Ohio State/ Michigan
No Class Rank (School policy)
Probably will go to law/business/grad. school but may not

In the South a reach would be Duke,UVA,Davidson......Emory a maybe....Tulane a maybe....what about George Washington or Maryland?

By B18c1cx (B18c1cx) on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 01:32 pm: Edit

Just a list based on what you have given, but give these schools some thought (all LACs, I'm a little biased).

Reaches:
1) Tufts
2) Colgate
3) Bates

Matches:
1) Holy Cross
2) Trinity (CT)
3) Franklin & Marshall

Safeties:
1) Denison
2) St. Lawrence
3) Muhlenberg

By Thekev (Thekev) on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 01:42 pm: Edit

im also on the Tulsa Youth Council and an alum of YLT (a program about philanthropy).

I will also write for the Tulsa World next year as a teen reporter.

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 04:39 pm: Edit

Take a look at Trinity University and Southwestern University, both in Texas. They would both be a match and they are very good with merit scholarships and financial aid. Tulane would be another match. In the West, see whether these schools might be appealing:
Calif: Occidental (Match), University of San Diego (match), University of Redlands (Safety),
University of Southern California (match/reach), Claremont McKenna (realistic reach).
Oregon: Willamette U (safety), Lewis & Clark (match/safety), Reed (match/reach)
Washington state: University of Puget Sound (match), Whitman College (realistic reach)

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 04:44 pm: Edit

Some east coast suggestions:
George Washington DC (match/reach), American (safety), Goucher (safety), Washington College in Maryland (safety), PA: Dickinson (match), Gettysburg (match), Muhlenberg (match) Haverford (reach), NY: Colgate (reach), Hamilton (match), U of Rochester (match) Mass: Wheaton (match), Clark (safety). Maine: Colby (reach/match), Bates (reach/match)

In the south, try: Emory (reach), Wake Forest (reach/match), Furman (match)

The reason I am saying many of these schools are reach/matches for you is that while your SATs are great, your GPA might still make some of them a reach. Good luck!

By Nickdad (Nickdad) on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 06:33 pm: Edit

You're in OK and didn't look at Oklahoma City University?

You have a good SAT and good GPA (they don't accept weighted). You could have received some good scholarship money as well.

By Thekev (Thekev) on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 10:11 pm: Edit

I am also Catholic and like Catholic schools of reasonable size. But I am totally cool with other affiliations as well. I really dig the ecumenical movement.

By Thekev (Thekev) on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 10:52 pm: Edit

I also am the top-scorer on the Quiz bowl team. We were favored to win state but lost in an upset.

By Par72 (Par72) on Saturday, June 26, 2004 - 12:47 am: Edit

Holy Cross might be a good match-very good liberal arts school with a nice campus.

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Saturday, June 26, 2004 - 04:57 pm: Edit

Holy Cross would be a good match/reach. A back up safety might be Providence College in Rhode Island. Since you're interested in political science, Georgetown should be on your list (a reach). Catholic University might also be of interest.

By Tsdad (Tsdad) on Saturday, June 26, 2004 - 10:04 pm: Edit

Consider Catholic U in DC. It will be easier for you to get into than Georgetown and just a few stops from the Senate side of Capitol Hill on the Metro Red Line (Union Station stop).

How about Vanderbilt and Tulane?

By Thekev (Thekev) on Sunday, June 27, 2004 - 03:04 pm: Edit

Do any LAC's come to mind? Just curious, I love universities, too.

By Thekev (Thekev) on Sunday, June 27, 2004 - 09:14 pm: Edit

Sorry--I didn't read the post very well. I now realize that many LACs have been suggested.

Carolyn- Do you think I have even a snowball's chance at G-town?
Thanks yall and as always the more suggestions the better!

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Sunday, June 27, 2004 - 10:10 pm: Edit

Georgetown would be a reach but a realistic reach - Everyone needs at least one reach on their list. Give it a try. The main thing that would hold you back at Georgetown might be your GPA - it's very good for most schools but so-so for Georgetown. Good recommendations from teachers and strong essays might pull you over the top. Or, if Georgetown is a frontrunner for you, consider applying ED. Good luck!

By A2a2 (A2a2) on Sunday, June 27, 2004 - 10:39 pm: Edit

LACs with good econ depts.

East:
Colgate (reach)
Franklin & Marshall
Hamilton
Union

California:
Claremont McKenna (reach, but excellent for your interests so worth a look)

Midwest:
Denison (pretty campus)

By Thekev (Thekev) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 03:23 pm: Edit

Would Vandy be a match or a reach?
Thanks yall and if you can keep'em coming, lol. And if it matters its 700v/650m

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 - 06:06 pm: Edit

I'd say Vandy is almost a match but leans towards a reach. Let's call it a realistic reach(probably better chance than Georgetown).

By Thekev (Thekev) on Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 03:12 pm: Edit

What would be good matches? And I tend to like colleges without Honors programs unless I could get in it.

By Thekev (Thekev) on Monday, July 05, 2004 - 11:00 pm: Edit

Is a 29 ACT important(35 in English)? I could prolly get it to 31 without prep probably higher with prep.

By Irishbird (Irishbird) on Tuesday, July 06, 2004 - 10:16 am: Edit

Try Villanova U as a match - since you're from OK.

By Thekev (Thekev) on Thursday, July 08, 2004 - 11:56 pm: Edit

IS Colgate a reach or match?

By Reidmc (Reidmc) on Friday, July 09, 2004 - 12:58 am: Edit

Colgate is a reach. It's selectivity is slowly moving up. My nephew was flat-out rejected this year with 1390 and a 3.8 UNweighted GPA. His SAT II average was 730.

If you like the school go ahead and apply, as they will respond positively to your ECs and leadership experience. But it is a definite reach.

By Annies (Annies) on Friday, July 09, 2004 - 07:25 am: Edit

Tufts would be an amazing school for you, and it might be a reach, but the ad com really looks at the whole person so with a strong essay you have a good shot. Their poli sci, IR, history, and econ majors are tops (I know first hand I'm a double major in two of them), and you get the advantages of a university (great libraries, Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, lots of research opportunities) at a small school with a LAC feel (president has students over for dinner, professors always available). Also you mentioned your ADD, and the Tufts Academic Resource Center is tops for helping students with learning disabilities and other academic assistance. Hope this helps.

By Thekev (Thekev) on Friday, July 09, 2004 - 11:08 pm: Edit

What about UVa? I fit the stats but haven't seen any for just out of staters.

The best Catholic schools in the United States:

Notre Dame (reach) JESUIT
Georgetown (reach) JESUIT
Boston College (reach) JESUIT
Holy Cross (match/reach) JESUIT
Fordham (match/safety) JESUIT
Villanova (match)
Providence (match/safety)
St. Louis University (safety) JESUIT
Santa Clara (safety) JESUIT
Loyola (MD) (safety) JESUIT
Fairfield (safety) JESUIT

By Par72 (Par72) on Saturday, July 10, 2004 - 11:59 am: Edit

Holy Cross is much better than Boston College. Holy Cross, Gtown, and Notre Dame have been national schools for over 100 years, while Boston College was a commuter school like DePaul until the 1980's.

By Ay_Caramba (Ay_Caramba) on Saturday, July 10, 2004 - 12:29 pm: Edit

BC is more selective than Holy Cross, and it has a nicer campus and location

By Par72 (Par72) on Saturday, July 10, 2004 - 09:45 pm: Edit

BC and BU benefit by their location as Northeastern is now realizing. However the yield for accepted students at both is low because it is not the first choice for many of those students. Holy Cross has a much more storied academic tradition and its alumni body more prominent -also even though HC IS 1/4 the size of BC, HC has produced several more Rhodes winners. not even close, HC alumni giving rate around 50% -while BC is low at 25% and HC's endowment per student is twice that of Boston College. US News has always rated HC a tier one LAC -only Gtown and Notre Dame can claim that as fellow Catholic schools.

DO AP scores help with admission?

By Thekev (Thekev) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 03:07 am: Edit

What about Colby or Bates?
