If you would like to help a poor girl in need...

SATs: 1430
GPA: I'm not sure, around an A- in a mix of honors/APs and regular classes at a competitive high school

Criteria:
*over 2,000 students
*less than 2 hours from a city to in a city
*has a nice, traditional campus
*has some liberals/crunchies
*not in the South or Midwest
*has snow
*probably a LAC, but you never know

Interests:
*neurobiology
*math
*international relations
*pre med
*engineering
*environmental science
(I'd like a school with at least 3 of these as options)

Have any ideas? let me know, thanks

Tufts! (Especially for IR/premed/IR/IR/IR oh and did I mention IR?).

Other good places that also match this would be Johns Hopkins or Georgetown.

Holy Cross-very good LAC,nice campus, 2800 students. HC has very good pre-med and its location is less than 1 hour from Boston. Obviously,Tufts,Gtown, and Hopkins are not LAC'S.

Wooo! I love opportunities to plug mah school, and this is a perfect one.

Check out Vassar.

-2,400 kids
-About an hour and a half from NYC, location in Poughkeepsie, NY (easy, cheap trains run back and forth 24/7... it rocks)
-AMAZING campus, awesome traditional buildings and all that
-Known as having a quite liberal student body
-SNOW! TRAYING!
And woot, it's an LAC. :)

As for your interests, there is no 'neurobiology' major per se, but that's going to be extremely rare at an LAC. It has great bio, and of special consideration in your case, cognitive science (very rare among LACs) programs. Vassar's med school acceptance track record is great (I'm not sure of specific figures, but I promise, they're great - call the admissions office and ask). Math is a strong department as well. I see a lot of scary classes there, haha... you won't be bored. There's a great multidisciplinary International Studies major... different from the usual International Relations, I think, but similar and awesome - look into it. There's a minor in Environmental Science and a major in Environmental Studies (like envirosci but addressing cultural and human interaction issues as well), and the departments behind those two are very strong. Obviously, you're not gonna find engineering - it's an LAC. You however could always do a hard science undergrad and specialize in engineering in grad school (something I myself am considering, actually).

Vassar is a great place, all around. If I can provide any more info, let me know. I urge you to look into it, though... seems like a great fit.

i'm not absolutely sure if these fit your criteria, but here's what popped up in my mind...

whitman college, george washington untiversity, reed college, american U, occidental college, wesleyan university, and oberlin(in ohio, but nonetheless a great school)

Brown in Providence, RI fits your criteria wonderfully, and is one of the best schools in the country for your areas of interest.

Voigtrob-I visited Vassar and I liked it a lot, it's so pretty! i'm considering it. my counselor put it as a 50/50 chance of getting in. what do you think about the size? Are there enough people around or do you get to know everyone and sick of everyone by the time you leave? It seems a reasonable size to me, though it is about the same size as my hs.

Brown I liked too, though it's unlikely I'd get in.

Thanks for all of the suggestions

Marist College. 65 miles north of NYC right on the Hudson river.

TCNJ just outside Philly. TCNJ has all of those majors.

Take a look at Dickinson in Pennsylvania - meets your size, location and major requirements. You'd probably get merit money from them and they'd be a safety.

if you wouldn't mind replacing snow with rain, uc davis would be perfect for you.

Not sure as I've not seen these two...what about Bucknell or Lehigh?

By Xmatt (Xmatt) on Saturday, June 12, 2004 - 05:30 pm: Edit

Wesleyan fits all the criteria (except engineering, but very few LACs have that)

Thanks for the help :) Any other suggestions that would be a good school & also a good bet for merit scholarships?

I will have to put a plug in for Middlebury....

Criteria:
*over 2,000 students check
*less than 2 hours from a city to in a city hmmm... well, 3 hours to Montreal, 3 1/2 to Boston, 5 1/2 to NYC... 40 minutes to Burlington, does that count??
*has a nice, traditional campus check
*has some liberals/crunchies check, but not overwhelmingly so
*not in the South or Midwest check
*has snow uhhhh.... CHECKCHECKCHECK
*probably a LAC, but you never know check

Interests:
*neurobiology check, and its a great program
*math check
*international relations check
*pre med check- not a major, more a track, but very strong... lots go to med school
*engineering nope
*environmental science check! another really strong program

You should at least come to tour!! If you get in contact with me I would be happy to answer any questions you have... even take you out to lunch if you come and visit :)

Oh by the way, I also thought Holy Cross would be a good place for you to check out. I really liked it when I went to visit, and it fits most if not all of your criteria.

Time to plug my school...check out Williams!

By Madelinemay11 (Madelinemay11) on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 04:44 pm: Edit

Apply to all the Ivies+Stanford....you'll have a shot a those, if your GPA is not bad. I don't think MIT/CIT let in many well-rounded students, so unless you have great Math credentials, you may be wasting your application money there.

BTW...stop nit-picking about details.

By Katiya (Katiya) on Monday, July 05, 2004 - 12:51 pm: Edit

update: 34 ACT (does that even make a difference?)
i'm not nit-picking about the details... those are my only criteria, i really don't much care where I go

any other suggestions? thank you all
