hey...to all of you that visited USC...is it a beautiful campus? What do you think also in comparison to UCLA? I looked at the USC website and did the virtual tour and was not too impressed. I was wondering what people who actually saw the campus thought of it?!

By Zevdebee (Zevdebee) on Saturday, June 05, 2004 - 03:43 pm: Edit

it is a very beautiful, structured campus. it is very well manicured with really great buildings. it is more compact then ucla, and you can tell that they spend more time and money into making the campus a nice place to live than ucla does. i would choose the actual usc 'campus' over ucla anyday.

I think the USC campus is gorgeous... beautiful buildings with the red brick and nice landscaping, trees, etc. I like UCLA better for other reasons (not appearance) but like Zevdebee said, USC is more compact and better maintained. Yeah it's really pretty... they're both, actually. But USC is nicer - they keep it up so well so you won't have to go off campus (you wouldn't want to... not the nicest area of LA!) :)

USC is one of the most beautiful campuses I've visited in Cali next to Stanford (too big) and pepperdine (can't beat the scenic views of the beach). It's really hard to explain the feel for USC's campus, you really have to visit and see for yourself. At first it seems big, but it's not because you could walk across campus in about 10 minutes. It's really compact, which I really like, not scattered out like UCLA is. Also, USC isn't hilly like UCLA and I think USC's buildings and structures are by far aesthetically superior to UCLA's. Royce Hall doesn't even compare to Bovard.

Yeah, I wish they'd add more pictures to their site. Like you, Foreigngirl, the virtual tour left a bad taste in my mouth, but everyone else seems to say that the campus is awesome. I can't wait to go on the tour there this summer, and if at all possible, I'd suggest that you go too. It's the only way to find our for sure :)

Today I took my SAT at USC and was blown away by its beauty, I've lived near it all my life and I had never really looked at it. I walked around and it's really nice.

i wouldnt even want to drive through the area surronding usc

lol usc=university of south central...I really hope it's not since attending there this fall.

I've been to both these beautiful schools, and UCLA's campus I found slightly more attractive (probably because the weather was rainy and miserable the day I visited SC). But because SC is a private institution, it has more money than LA to "manicure" its campus and maintain a more classy atmosphere. Perhaps if I'd seen it in sunshine my opinions would differ.

it also depends on what your personal style is.i do agree that usc has a nicer campus but ucla is still nice and along with westwood, id take ucla's campus anyday. now, if you take away surrounding areas (westwood and downtown la)and consider the campus alone, i would agree that usc is better.

is surrounding environment important to you? another poster mentioned the beauty of pepperdine and stanford and while they are nice, i personally dont like either one. stanford looks like a mission and pepperdine is rather isolated.

thanks all you guys for the information. Sounds like USC seems to have a very beautiful campus. I will visit this fall and see for myself and yeah the fact that USC is a private institution does make it a little more attractive to me (even though UCLA used to be my #1 choice always), since I will need some financial aid that I won't get as an international student at UCLA. But I will have to see if I even get admitted first....Thanks again guys!

USC is in the ghetto, 41st and Vermont. Very, very, VERY Ghetto. VERY. I like the campus, but I wouldn't step outside of it at night, if I were you.

By Thedad (Thedad) on Monday, June 07, 2004 - 01:56 pm: Edit

Okay, many people know that I am not a USC fan but saying that the area around USC is "Ghetto" is over the top and shows an inability to distinguish between a working class black neighborhood and someplace like Compton. I would certainly have your "street smarts" turned on, particularly at night, but by the litmus tests of cars/bars/graffiti (iron bars on windows, not the kind where you drink), the area around USC isn't *that* bad. I'd worry more about break ins to cars than anything else.

The supposition that USC spends a lot more on "manicuring" than UCLA is a bit dubious, too.
For UCLA, factor out the sub-par visuals due to the fact that there's a *lot* of construction going on right now...scaffolding/etc. isn't the most attractive scenery. There's construction going on on virtually all parts of campus: building a new hospital, new dorms, refurbishing on of the major halls (Bunche?), etc. I'll stack up the central area of UCLA, from Murphy Hall to Royce to North Campus to Ackerman against USC any day. USC is looks very nice, too...they're just different.

Bluestar, I thought Stanford was kinda isolated too. There wasn't a lot you were going to get to off-campus without a car.

yeah they're both isolated... i dont like either campus.
