I got in the GSP program of NYU. I don't know if it's really worth it though.. I'd have to go to florence for the first year and after two years i would transfer to STERN. is it really worth it? should I go to PENN STATE or AMERICAN or SYRACUSE instead? give me your advice..

Well GSP guarentees admission into the CAS however you will need to check about Sterns. They have become vigirously strict with transfers into sterns.. the percentage of those given acceptence via transfer is extremely low...what do you want to major in

Imo, American sucks dead fish with a straw.

They're pretty good on international relations/business but other than that it's about as rigorous as a overcooked piece of fettucine. The dorms are lousy, the campus reminded me of a jc, the admissions officer at the info session was the single most underwhelming person I've met in the process so far....

I want to major in business.. but i heard that GSP is not very good.. and now that you tell me its hard to get transferred to stern i guess i should just have to choose one of the other universities.. what about penn state? thanks for the info on american thedad..

if it's business you want, Sterns is the best

By Jkazoo (Jkazoo) on Friday, February 28, 2003 - 07:07 pm: Edit

I mean, my son is still waiting to hear from both. I didn't think they started notifying for another month.

i can send you the e-mails if you want. I think they just started notifying. I got an e-mail from syracuse and got in the mail the American University acceptance letters.

I'm in GSP and I can tell you that while for most people it's hard to get in Stern, they have a special rule for GSP students. As long as that was the school you initially applied to, GSP students should be able to tranfer with no problem as long as you keep the minimum GPA (I think it's still 3.0--not to hard for GSP).

wrong.. it's virtually impossible for even a CAS student to transfer into stern.. too many students were applying to CAS to avoid the tougher admission and than transfering to their intial choice, stern... the university has cut down on this drastically now

Hi, I graduated from Stern this year, and I was originally in GSP. Yes, I have heard that it is getting tougher by the year to transfer to stern. However, as long as you keep your minimum GPA to transfer to Stern (minimum is different for every school... Tisch requires highest, Stern the second, CAS next, and rest follows), you should be able to transfer in fine. the minimum GPA for Stern has been rising every year in order to reflect the increase in the number of students that want to transfer from GSP, but that shouldn't discourage you from starting from GSP, if you did get the offer: If you got into GSP, the reality is that your stats/essay/app weren't good enough to get into Stern from the beginning. Getting into GSP and having the opportunity to transfer into STern, then, is a great second chance not to be missed if you really want to get into Stern.

When I originally applied for NYU, I applied as undecided. I did not have a specific desire to get into Stern at that point. I wanted to go to Tisch more than Stern, because I'm naturally very creative/artistic, however, with some parents/peer pressure as well as reality bites of being the only child from Japan, I figured getting a diploma from Stern would be a big safety net in whatever I'll do in the future--whether it's art, fashion, music, whatever... you need business skills to survive in this world.

However, afterall, I actually feel very lucky that I've had a GSP experience before Stern. Straight Stern kids end up only taking business related classes, and end up arrogant, secluded, king-of-his-own-little-world people. In fact, inside information tells me that businesses, even financial institutions, are beginning to question Sternie's arrogance and prefer to hire a non-Stern, willing-to-learn, humble student instead. I've taken the summer easy, and I haven't really started my job search yet, but I am pretty confident that having the GSP background, with a wealth of important knowledge OTHER than just numbers and calculations, really helps in shaping your future, global awareness, as well as personal character. In fact, once you get into Stern, you'll be surprised to see how many Professors agree that GSP transfers actually do a lot better in their classes than straight Sternies.

I was lucky to get the offer of spending the first year in Florence, Italy. NYU's 56-acre campus is absolutely gorgeous, and I was able to experience and adapt to 2 cultures in the same 4 years most students would spend stuck in one place. I learned a new language, got to know friends from so many different countries, and thus was able to expand my network beyond this country and boost my confidence that I can survive in any country (If you can survive the conservative Tuscan Italiani)

I am an International Student to begin with, so pursuing a college where I can experience as much cultural variety was a big part of my decision. But I do feel that if you are an American student that got into GSP, it would especially be an enlightening experience to go to Italy. I regret to run into so many Americans that spent their whole lives in U.S., let alone their own little State. It would be a great experience to throw yourself into a totally different culture, and face how non-Americans perceive Americans, adapt to and grow beyond it. GSP, unlike Stern or any other school's study-abroad programs, allows you to go abroad for a FULL YEAR. In other schools, the MAX you get to go is a SEMESTER, and there are just too many things that can't be accomplished in jut a semester. So if you are not just thinking about getting into a good school but also seeking a fulfilling college experience that you can treasure for a lifetime, GO, by all means. Take GSP, go to Europe, and trust yourself for getting into Stern or any other school later. You wish, and therefore you will.
