My son plays violin and has an interest in the engineering/recording side of music as well. Does anyone have info about undergrad programs in music and recording engineering? He would like to continue with performance, but also train for something on the technical side. I dont think he wants to do (straight)engineering, and just play in the orchestra, but would prefer a much closer link betweeen music and recording engineering. Thanks.

Search for postings by 'Jenniferpa' - I'm pretty sure her D was interested in sound recording, etc., and she contributed lots to the CC boards over the past year. I know Ithaca has both music performance and recording as my D considered it seriously for vocal performance. I'm sure there are loads of other places.

I'm a little bit biased having gone to NYU for undergraduate and currently going there as a Ph.D. student. Nonetheless, NYU now has two very good programs in music recording and engineering. The Steinhardt School of Education has a program in Music Technology that is rather prestigious: faculty include Kenneth Peacock and Robert Rowe and they give a good education from the people I know who went there. But now there is a new program started last year called the Clive Davis Program in Recorded Music in the Tisch School of the Arts. I know the Steinhardt program much better because I have taken some of the program's classes as a non-major and knew people in the program. All of the people I knew either started their own recording studios or have jobs.

For a program that offers more of an engineering program, there is a five year joint engineering/recording program offered between the Peabody Conservatory and Johns Hopkins School of Engineering. I'm not too sure of a lot of the other details of the program.

Hope this helps.

My son is a violinist and wanted to go into a commercial music program but still study classical violin. He chose Belmont University in Nashville. What we did not know is they have huge music business and music technology programs. So much music is done in Nashville (and definitely more than country) that it is a great place to train. I believe also that U. of Miami has a music tech program as well. Good luck.
