What would a person with their undergrad major in business and masters in sports management do as a carrer? I'm just curious as I might have some interest.

Well many of the people who go into sports marketing, player personnel, or even become athletic directors in college have a degree in business. This is so they know how to work with the large amounts of money that are generated in their system. Sports business has always been a passion and an interest of mine.

You might also want to look at the University of Oregon -- don't under estimate the importance of the Phil Knight (Nike) connection.

One of my friends is going to UMass-Amherst for sports management
| By Rlplaya31 (Rlplaya31) on Saturday, May 29, 2004 - 12:47 pm: Edit |
Yea I've heard that Amherst has a very good program for sports management. I have also heard that Ohio University has one of the best in the country. Can anyone verify this for me?
| By Doubleg326 (Doubleg326) on Saturday, May 29, 2004 - 02:49 pm: Edit |
Three of the top programs are UMass-Amherst, Ohio U & Bowling Green. I looked into those but they are all in the middle of nowhere and have below average athletic programs. I am also looking into sport management as a major. I decided that I am going to look into schools that offer sport management, but are also known for their academics and athletics as well.

USC and UCLA would both be great. Even though i dont believe either offer a specific Sports Management program, both offer "Management" as concentrations, if i remember right (i know USC does for sure).
think about internships you can land in LA.. Clippers, Lakers, Dodgers, and hell, all the teams around there. oh and dont forget about all the tv/radio/newspapers around.

I did not know that Univ. of Oregon had the top ranked sports business program. That really broadens up my searches. I may have to get some more information on that school.

i applied to UO and got accepted easily (their acceptance rate is like 80%). i also got in the honors program. however, i turned them down for USC, for several reasons, main one being that Eugene is just not the best place on earth for me.
it's in the middle of no where, and there isn't much to do there. there is a LOT of weed and other drugs. on a friday night the college is basically covered with clouds, which isn't for me.
the education there isn't the best, but sports management is very good there. the campus as far as i know is veyr nice as well and there are a lot of new buildings.
just somethings that might help you...

Are there any east coast schools that offer sports management as a major? What about going to a school with a great sports program, majoring in business then going to law school? My son is very interested in sports management as a career choice.Anyone?

University of Michigan has a sports management program, which would probably be the ideal athletic/academic combo for sports management. For me, I am going to U. of Maryland (no sports management) and I am majoring in some concentration of business with a second major or a minor in kinesiology (exercise science). Next summer, I have an internship lined up with a minor league baseball team and I am heavily considering becoming a team manager for one of the varsity teams at Maryland.

Looking into Ohio University I realized that there are a lot of great connnections that the students get by going through this program. I am not worried about being in the middle of nowhere because I am more worried about the education. Besides I guess Ohio U gets their students a lot of great internships that can spring them into a successful career in the sports business.

For those looking at Law School - Marquette University Law School is home to the National Sports Law Institute and students can specialize in sports law. They also have excellent internships with major league sports teams. My D is considering this.

Hey you should think about going to Game Face. Its a sports training academy that gets people jobs with sports teams. One of my friends went through and I'm probably going to do the same thing when I graduate. I'm having very little luck finding a job in sports. Their website is:
