I have decided to give college a second chance. I have no idea where to start or what I need to do. I was born and attended school in Ireland, but I am an American citizen. I did take the SAT's here when I was 15, but at 24 having never applied to colleges I'm finding it difficult. I am interested in attending a college part-time in the NY area. I have not decided on a career, however I am interested in perhaps teaching. Has anybody done something like this, any advice? Should I go in person to the admissions office of a couple of schools? What kind of information will they require? Basically, where do I start?

I would approach a couple of schools in your area. Since you are thinking about education, you might want to look at some of the SUNY's in your area or other state schools, since most state school have Schools of Education. State schools in our state also offer services for non-traditional students. If the schools you look at have services such as that, they could advise you and tell you what kind of things you will need to do to put together an application. If you have difficulty meeting the expectations, you could probably pick up the basics at a community college and transfer the credits after you have demonstrated that you are "college material". Actually, taking some classes at a community college might be a good way to get your feet wet and credits usually transfer.

A few suggestions -
1. Columbia College of General Studies, designed for older students.
2. Your local CC is a wonderful place to start taking courses.
3. Bryn Mawr or Smith have programs for older students, (I don't remember which). Contact them, they would probably know of programs in your area.
Good luck!
