im going to Lehigh ... i guess it's pretty elite (ranked in the 30s) but its not really a big name school except in the tristate area

By Savedbythebell7 (Savedbythebell7) on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 01:37 am: Edit

nope, but i'll be going to new york city for the first time next week! I'm not a big fan of snow, I prefer to avoid it at ALL costs. 71 miles of beach in San Diego is good enough for me.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)

Best value for what I want (EE). Got a great scholarship.

By Kellygirl (Kellygirl) on Saturday, May 01, 2004 - 03:46 am: Edit

Syracuse University (pending NYU waitlist) because they gave me a good financial aid package and I loved the campus. I didn't choose my other schools because: a) too many of my classmates would be attending, b) didn't like the campus, or c) too expensive.

Suny Buffalo

I got waitlisted at 3 schools, Suny Binghamton, BU and UMD CP and my dad won't pay for the other schools I got into cuz he feels it is too expensive.

So either I wait and get off a waitlist or I go to Buffalo and I transfer after a semester or 2

Lehigh - Mechanical engineering and great finaid package.

By Dallasstar (Dallasstar) on Saturday, May 08, 2004 - 12:46 am: Edit

There's a good chance that I'll be going to the University of Texas at Austin, but I'm still waiting for my response from the waitlists of Northwestern and Washington University in St. Louis. I was accepted to Carnegie Mellon, but I decided that I wouldn't be happy there, so I declined their offer (on top of the fact that CMU costs 43k, but UT costs 10k minus 4k scholarship per year, and that UT is ranked 12 for engineering versus CMU being ranked 11). My undergraduate major will be biomedical engineering.

now that I think about it, I have a hard time believing some of these schools, being top 50 (in certain polls) are not big name:

Lehigh x 3
Tulane
University of Florida
University of Texas - Austin
University of Toronto, Canada
University of Wisconsin
William and Mary

By Talrasha (Talrasha) on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 - 11:59 am: Edit

hehe the University Of Toronto is most certainly reputable, but not as reputable as HYP.

I feel that it was the best choice for the time being because tuition costs only 4185 CANADIAN a year (8000 in upper 2 years) and I have the privilege of driving to school in my luxurious vehicle. =D So I won't have to pay for a dorm...

It's like.. a free ride to a prestigious school!!

Still, I'd rather go to Yale =)

It's all in the eye of the beholder, isn't it?!

What is to one is another to others

So, I guess Big Name can be debated to some extinct - over what schools have earned their Big Names

Let's break it down after more results have come in

the results are in :)

Illinois Wesleyan University for the money...
Actually I was accepted at UVA and UWisc Madison, but they were too expensive for my parents to pay. I envy those people in my high school whose parents can send them to big name univ. UVA has been my favourite since I was a freshman in high school, but I'll get over it... one day...

By Scubasteve (Scubasteve) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 11:07 am: Edit

being ranked #37 nationally, lehigh is an elite school... however not too many people have heard of it so i felt it falls under the category of "not big name" thus i included it in this post

It's a joke. I'm not going to harvard. You know, because a lot of people are mentioning "elite" and "big name" schools, as if they aren't.

I withdrawl my comment due to its excellent analysis of a problem I am seeing within the same thread.

My apologies.

By Sarasote (Sarasote) on Wednesday, June 02, 2004 - 07:09 pm: Edit

people are saying names such as "tulane, lehigh, university of toronto, and emory" because though they are excellent schools, most of them are underrated by the general population and the common person would not know if they were good or not. most people would be like oh emory nice. but its not like "HARVARD, PRINCETON, YALE, STANFORD" which have international recognition even among 10 year olds.

Embry Riddle Aeronautical University-its my dream school with everything I could want-gave me a decent amount of money but still a lot more than my other choices (Have you heard of it? Most have not. Its in Prescott, AZ)

Most probably UC Irvine, although I'm still holding out for some of my reach schools on appeal, and also might apply for the spring semester to a couple LAC's. Not too excited about UCI, but it's the best UC I've been accepted to, and if I go there I'll have senior standing and I'll finish school in less than a year. (Before you go "huh," you should know that I'm a transfer student. :)).

By Chapter322 (Chapter322) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 10:54 pm: Edit

Speaking of not being known, for some reason, many people know Tulane University. Maybe it's the whole MTV Mardi Gras thing, but besides that, Tulane is highly respected, especially when it comes to finding a high paying job. It is HIGHLY underrated by US News because of the low retention rate. Many people don't expect the academics to be very rigorous at Tulane, but they are EXTREME, and therefore many kids drop out first semester because of Bourbon Street and the likes.

I think the school is using its connections to change it's image. First they're on MTV and then they were mentioned on some WB shows. And now the class of 2008 is the most competitive admitted class in the history of the school.... I give them an A for effort.
