I'm thinking about getting singles but everyone seems to be getting doubles. The extra cost is no problem, but is there any disadvantages in getting singles?

I just want to confirm that you are a freshman.
If so, i would strongly suggest a double rather than a single. A double allows you to be forced to socialize. I know many of my friends who started out freshman year in a single and ended up spending half of their time in my room wishing they had a room mate. Think about those days when you might be sick or lonely etc...Freshman year is easier with someone else by your side. Also your freshman year roommate might become a lifelong friend!
One might also consider that having a room mate may become troublesome. But its an excellent opportunity to learn some early life lessons, and, if things dont work out most schools will reassign you housing if need be.
