Is it true that Stanford has the same reputation as MIT in math/science academically? Is there hard evidence to back it up? I hear the environment there is quite laid-back, so I don't realy see how it can be on the same level as MIT academically.

Stanford is "laid-back" as in casual rather than high-strung. It does not mean lazy. The science program at Stanford is top notch and will work you very hard.

The US News grad school rankings for mathimatics and sciences have Stanford higher ranked or equal to MIT for most things.

Ya, "laid back" does not mean lazy at all. Stanford students are some of the brightest and most motivated in the world. "laid back" means not so formal. There is a saying that Stanford students are like ducks on a pond. They try to look calm on top but are paddling madly underneath.
