Hey ... this board seems to be pretty helpful in helping out with the college search. I am currently a high school junior and i am starting to compose my list of colleges that i am going to apply to. My GPA is a 3.6 and i rank 32 out of 225 students. I want to go to school in NYC, or somewhere relatively close and major in english/journalism. I know that NYU is the best place for me to go, however my self esteem is about an inch thick when it comes to my grades and i don't think that i will get in. So, my question to anyone is, what are some good schools that you would recomend (please if you would dont recomend any in NJ!!! i need out of this state)? I was looking at Sarah Lawrence. Also in anyones experience with religiously affiliated colleges (ie Fordham) do you feel that your education was compromised in order to obtain the religions moral standards? Perhaps do you feel that it was not as liberal with its discussion/material as say an unaffiliated college would have been? any answers to these questions would help me so much. i am looking to compile a list of 6 or so colleges to apply to so feel free to give your top picks!

huh? i don't get it. what do you think you will get on your SATs? if the answer is 1250+, you should be applying to nyu - early.
if that 3.6 is unweighted, i don't know why you are ruling out nyu.

Hey, I grew up in Jersey---so I can relate to your desire to get out...!
I took just one course at NYU but, as I remember,
the experience of being IN the city sort of overwhelmed that experience. If you don't like Jersey, you might not like living around the area around NYU.
Are you thinking of commuting?
The proper antidote to Jersey is a college that's at least three states away. Greyhound isn't fun, but it does the job.

i took my SATS once in october just to see how i would fair and got a 1220 ... i plan to try again in April(after have i been been tutored for several months). The 3.6 is unweighted. i do however need some back up schools.

oh and commuting is not an option. i want to work for a magazine so NYC is probably my best bet short of moving out west. anyways i love the city and i would rent an apartment of my aunts in the village along with a room-mate because it would be less money than boarding (she had it for over 45 years, gotta love rent control).

I'm slightly biased because SLC is where I'll be going next year
but for someone interested in a career in journalism, I would highly recommend Sarah Lawrence. I, too, want to eventually work as a magazine reporter and I have long since wanted to study in either New York or D.C. Starting out my college search, I narrowed my choices to GW, NYU, and SLC (among others) and chose Sarah Lawrence for the broad liberal arts background (which many journalists will tell you is the best preparation for the profession) and the close individual attention given by professors. Also, the high numbers of SLC graduates represented in the media is outstanding considering the small size of the school. SLC demands gargantuan amounts of writing from their students and their writing program is one of the best in the country. Personally, from all I've read and heard, I think it's the perfect school for the future journalist. Of course, then again, I'm slightly biased.

Look at the S.I. Newhouse School at Syracuse University. They have one of the best communications schools in the country and will allow you to actually major in magazine journalism.
I must admit to being somewhat biased as I transferred to Syracuse as a junior many years ago and went to the communications school. Since then, having a degree from Syracuse has been invaluable in helping me in my career - I'm now a full-time freelance magazine writer. I'm also continually impressed at how many Syracuse grads are in top level jobs from TV to magazines to publishing to newspapers to advertising. And, the Newhouse School at Syracuse continues to have a wonderful job placement rate for recent grads.
Another possibility for you may be Ithaca college - a somewhat smaller school and program but still good.
Carolyn
