I am an International student from India, and I wanted to know how good or how bad IIT is.
By engineer on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - 07:27 pm: Edit
My grandpa went to IIT and he's a world renowned electrical engineer. But I don't think that IIT is what it used to be. If you want a great engineering school in Illinois, go to Urbana-Champaign.
By Jenniferelaine (Jenniferelaine) on Friday, January 24, 2003 - 10:59 pm: Edit
Strange thing..I'm a psychology major, and IIT is trying to recruit me like mad. They honestly send me an application every week.
By rohan on Sunday, February 02, 2003 - 12:55 am: Edit
Could anyone who got into IIT post their stats please. Also when do they send you a confirmation as to whether you got in or not.
By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Sunday, February 02, 2003 - 02:18 am: Edit
well!
i got into iit and my stats are:
sat1:1400
sat2:math2c:800
chem:800
writing:760

ECs are above average and recos are amazing.,
"just that you should know,rohan."

For gogirl

By mika on Tuesday, February 04, 2003 - 04:53 am: Edit
I got the Camras scholarship from IIT, I'm going to attend the interview weekend on feb 15th-17th, and another scholarship for international students, which covers around 3/4 of expenses so far. That's great, but I'm having some doubts on how good IIT acually is.
I'm from Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Major: architecture. GPA 5.0 out of 5.0, SAT: 1400 (m760, v640), loads of EC, excellent recommendations
But... Can someone really tell me what IIT is like? I've read some sad stuff concerning student life, like, no fun, just study all the time, even on weekends, need more girls blah blah
It atually does seem as though they could do with some more activities on campus besides sudying. I guess the really good thing is the fact that it's so near downtown of Chicago, tho no use of that until 21
By haha on Tuesday, February 04, 2003 - 07:44 pm: Edit
Rohan, are you talking about Indian Institute of Technology, or Illinois Institute of Technology....I think these people are confused.
By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Wednesday, February 05, 2003 - 01:01 am: Edit
hi mika
well!i got into iit with same sat score ,ecs and recos as yours.however it is noy confirmed whether i will be coming for the camras interview.
as far as iit's status is concerned ,it is a good school;but far from a high profile ivy league.
my dad studied in iit;and he said that though iit in the 70s and 80s had an amazing reputation [a major contender with m.i.t] ,he is not very sure about the academic department now.
did you contact the iit admissions office about the arrangements that have to be made for attending the camras interview for international students?
if you have ,then please let me know.
By mika on Wednesday, February 05, 2003 - 03:49 am: Edit
Sure I have
As an international student, I have to pay my own total costs, no refunds or anything, so it's a bit expensive, plus my father will be coming with me. talkin about extra costs...
But it's very important for me if he takes a good look at IIT and what it's like, perhaps give me his own advice. He's also and architect, which makes it even more convenient for my major selection.
Since we both got the visa, which is unexplicably hard to get in Yugoslavia, unless you have a damn good reason (I guess the interview weekend was good enough..) we'll stay in Chicago for extra couple of days. I mean, if I'm about to go to and fro, with the flight from Belgrade to Chicago being 12h long, I'd love to spend a bit more money and stay for the extra few days exploring the city, rather than go home in 48 hours.
IIT representatives or maybe students will be waiting for us at the O'Hare International airport (I've repored my flight details to them), take us to the campus with a shuttle bus, and as for the rest of the events during the weekend, I know nothing more than what it says in the info booklet. Like everyone else, I'll be staying in someone's room on campus, and my dad will stay in a hotel.
that's about it, I guess..
As for IIT being a good or a not-so-good place - well I think it's pretty good for architecture.. Surely I will know a lot more after the visit - talking to students will be crucial.
By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Thursday, February 06, 2003 - 04:05 am: Edit
well mika!
sounds like you are going to major in architecture
from what i heard[courtesy dad],iit's course for architecture is amazing.
ARE YOU REALLY THAT SERIOUS ABOUT IIT THAT YOU ARE WILLING TO COME HALF WAY ACROSS THE WORLD ?
what all other universities have you applied to?
you must be able to get in quite easily with your sat score ,gpa ,ecs and recos.
i applied to about 10 ;and got into iit and michigan state university.what about you?
did you give your sat2s?
you have a reasonably good chance of getting into some top american schools if your sat2s are good and sat1 is qiute good by the elite schools in the u.s.
too many question .just curious;but reply back.
By rohan on Thursday, February 06, 2003 - 11:31 am: Edit
To haha
Well even though I am from India,It's Illinois institute of technology that I am talking about in this case.As for the Indian Institutes of Technology, the less said about them the better(thas one place where I am sure I'm sure I'm not going to get in).Curios :are you from India by any chance?
By rohan on Thursday, February 06, 2003 - 11:43 am: Edit
As for Mika and gogirl,
My friend's cousin is doing her master's there and quite frankly, she doesn't recommend the Institute very favourably. But Mika,if you were so keen on going to a place like Chicago, you would have been much better of applying to a palce Like Urbana Champaign. It's supposed to be much better than IIT.From what I've heard the food at IIT sucks,so if you're one of those foodie types, you're done for, buddy. In fact, one of my friends wasn't applying till yesterday, cos he had the food in mind ,and if gogirl is going to IIT you're such for good looking girls will continue...
By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Thursday, February 06, 2003 - 09:53 pm: Edit
rohan,
you don't have to be so carping just because you did not apply on time for iit.
"just that you should know i got my jan sat score -1470."[this is in response to one of your posts on top.]
and i am not going to chicago.
By mika on Friday, February 07, 2003 - 05:56 am: Edit
rohan: no, I'm not a foody type, so I probably won't mind
It's not really my plan to go study in the U.S. and think about nothing but food
gogirl: my whole thing with applying to unis in the States was rather "hastily-done", to put it mildly. so, no, I didn't do the SAT2's mainly because I didn't have time to prepare them (barely had time to figure out SAT1) and because I couldn't possibly afford the universities for which I need SAT2 results (like Ivy-lague or sub-ivy league- since international students are treated differently when it comes to any financial aid, scholarships, and of course our payment possibilities totally differ from yours, in terms of taking a loan to pay for the studies.. or something ). Basically, I was looking for universities that require only SAT1, that have substantial intl. freshman merit-based or need-based aid (or combined), that are in larger cities, and that have NAAB's accredited architecture program... That pretty much narrowed down the choices to 6, but again after careful thinking and certain financial statements stuff, I only applied to 4. I know that's an awfully small number, but I was going for what seemed closest to a sure shot- that I can definitelly afford in case I get in with some scholarship/finaid offered. Then again, I guess one can never be sure of anything when it comes to university admissions.
You were wondering about why the he11 I would want to come halfway across the world just to visit IIT... Well, they're my best and only offer so far, the first uni. that responded with such a great scholarship possibilty, so why not? It's a small investment for what I could be getting. Besides, you said yourself that they do have an amazing program for architecture (I also think so). Why should I care for what "friend's cousin" says - perhaps I like the place, perhaps I don't, perhaps it's really great for studying architecture, which is the most important factor for me... It's an offer that I can say yes or no to, which I will definitelly know after the interview weekend.
And, come on, isn't Chicago a beautiful city?
Bear in mind also that 300,000+ Serbs are living there, which kinda suites me as well
By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Friday, February 07, 2003 - 10:44 am: Edit
well mika
you are one level headed guy ;good for you.
go ahead[though you don't require that from me] and go to chicago. enjoy yourself.
sad for me ;because i am not coming to chicago for the camras interview.got a 1470 in jan sat1;did my sat 2s already.
so i am hoping for a better school.
but even then,if i don't get in anywhere else;i am definitely going to meet you in iit for next fall;
ALL THE BEST FOR THE CAMRAS INTERVIEW.
i am sure you will impress them.
p.s.:did you get the initial 9000$aid for international students.
By rohan on Friday, February 07, 2003 - 11:08 am: Edit
which are the 4 universities that you applied to mika?
By rohan on Friday, February 07, 2003 - 11:11 am: Edit
And one more thing,it was you who asked for how the University was.So if you don't like to hear anything bad about IIT,Then don't ask...
By mika on Friday, February 07, 2003 - 05:38 pm: Edit
I'm not a guy, I'm a girl
rohan: sorry, I wasn't really referring to your comment in a negative way, but it was a bit too personal- I am open to both good and bad comments, but it's not fair to impose one's attitude to others. Who knows, maybe I find out that the place suites me fine, maybe I'll be ok with the things your friend's cousin doesn't like.
Then again, I maybe not.
the other universities I applied to are Tulane, University of Miami and Univ of Southern Cali... I'm least sure of USC, I may not be good enough for them, but I just had to apply there.
which ones are you applying to?
gogirl: congrats on you jan SAT1 score-that's quite a rise- and your sat2's! I'm sorry to hear that you're not coming to the camras interview- we could've met next week
were you, in the end, confirmed the invitation for the weekend or not? what is your major?
btw yes, I did get the $9,000 as well
By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Saturday, February 08, 2003 - 12:48 am: Edit
hi mika!
really thought that you were a guy!!?
my intended major is chemical engineering;
but i opted for computer science in iit-better opportunities and everything...
i am not really aware of tulane and miami
but university of southern california IS REALLY,REALLY GOOD!
you will get in;but doesn't southern california need sat2s?
besides i am not very sure if they give aid for international students.
however if they have changed their policy the let me know.i was very keen on applying there;but backed out in the last moment.
do tulane and university of miami give aid?
just let me know about the deadlines as well.
when are you flying to chicago?
By rohan on Saturday, February 08, 2003 - 02:13 am: Edit
Mistake on my part,I associated your name with the Formula 1 driver Mika Hakkinen.Sorry if you thought my comments were imposing.
I'm one of the most confused souls,so I still have't made up mind to all the Universities that I'm going to apply to.However,IIT is one place That I applied to a week or so back.I also applied to Florida Institute of Technology,Rutgers,The State Universities of New Jersey.I'm going to apply to Purdue, and yeah,I also applied to a couple of Ivies ,just for the skae of applying.Outside the US,To University of Toronto.
By rohan on Saturday, February 08, 2003 - 02:31 am: Edit
One more thing, aren't you also Milena on the other message board discussing Tulane. Not that it makes any difference, just curious that's all.
Advice for gogirl:
Check out the link to what are my chances,Tulane.you'll find all the dope on Tulane there.
By Mika on Saturday, February 08, 2003 - 02:45 am: Edit
gogirl: yeah, I know that USC is very competitive... SAT2's are not required, though they obviously can help. as for aid, they don't have any for intl. students, except for two merit scholarships that require a separate application- I applied for them... But those are also very very competitive, so I don't really know what my chances are. But hey, trying cannot hurt
Both Tulane and Miami have reasonably good scholarships that you are automatically considered for, based on your SAT's, GPA and, I suppose, overall impression... Tulane also offers need based finaid for internationals.
And yup, I arranged everything for Chicago, so I have a flight next Saturday, 15th... Can't wait
rohan: yeah, I guess mika is both a female and a male name...
and why are you applying so... well, not late, but surely most people apply sept-dec? most of the scholarships have earlier deadlines...
By gogirl on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - 03:34 am: Edit
milena or mika;
if you have come back from chicago and are checking this site then tell me about the camras interview.

Guess who got into IIT,and thay gave me a scholarship to go with it.But I'd like to know that the International student scholarship that they give of 9000$ is p.a., right?
Dumb question but its been playing upon my mind.
By Gogirl (Gogirl) on Tuesday, March 04, 2003 - 06:02 am: Edit
yes it is a renewable scholarship.
if u are staying on campus, then the aid is $9000.
however,if u are not then,it is just$5000 alone.
got the acceptance letter from iit a couple of weeks ago.

When I first came to IIT I didn't like. Things got better though becaues I got really into the martial arts club. I'm a junior now. The SLC (our student government) has decided to stop funding the club though so basically, DON'T COME TO THIS SCHOOL.
IIT lacks life on campus, student activites, the dorms are terrible, and the campus is ugly. The new student center they promised to build? It's a good 3 years over due and still not done. And of course there are no women here.
The food is horrid. The cafeteria in the HUB was shut down in 2002 for health violations by the Chicago Department of public health. The violations included things like dead rats and improper storage of toxic chemicls.
The only reason I came here was for the combined BS/MD program which means I'll be going to med school soon.
My own stats.
SAT: 1500
Verbal: 700 Math: 800
Math SAT II, IIC: 800
SAT II Verbal: 710
I did research in high school and scored 5 on both my chemistry and biology AP exams. I was accepted to every University of California school and was offered full scholarships at Irivine, San Diego, and Davis.
In other words, I regret coming here especially with the offers I recieved. I only hope med school will pay off.
Heed my warning, do NOT come to the Illinois Institute of Technology.
By Creatorcat (Creatorcat) on Friday, March 14, 2003 - 09:10 am: Edit
you can always transfer to another school, if you have such a 'high' opinion about IIT now.
but why did you come there, and turn down all the UC's in the first place? For what I know, pre-med is not the strongest major there (at IIT). Tho I think it's really good for engineering and architecture.
I received a full-tuition Camras scholarship and so far, it's the best offer I have, so I'll probably enroll at IIT, majoring in architecture. And I don't mind the ugly campus, since I'll obviously be spending most of the time in Crown hall, which I like.
And I'm a girl.

Congrats on getting into IIt,although its not a great school, its decent.Even I got in,although I'm not going there.Did you get the 9000$ scholarship, more often than not,a lot of Indians end up going there simply because of the fact that IIT is very generous with money.the job situation in the US as a whole is very bad(so I heard) and IIt itself has a lot of competition in Chicago itself from other Univs like UIUC,UIC,UChic.
By Rishabh (Rishabh) on Thursday, June 05, 2003 - 03:21 pm: Edit
Hi all
i'm from india too and have been admitted to undergrad elec engineering. yeah got that $9000 scholarship which is why i'm going there too. i applied basically to private colleges and this is the only one that offered scholarship. the bigger colleges didn't. if i'm too unhappy, i'll probably change to urbana after a year. just want to know who all are sure of going to IIT for undergrad? is it easy to transfer? what housing n meal plan is good? chosen a room mate yet? hey whats this camras scholarship??
