HYP Williams and MIT...Middlebury is not (they are close but not completely)

Haon,
Middlebury has recently updated thier policy to note that the college is 100% need blind for internationals, regardless of resources.

my mistake...that change must have been made within the last several months...

Yup, first it was need-blind, then they changed it, then now they changed back to need-blind again

on a separate note, how's middlebury's endowment doing? I see they've been spending like mad over the last 5 years or so...where's the money coming from?

Midd's endowment is just over $600 million (not close to Williams and Amherst, but still among the top handful of LACs). Middlebury has been expanding its infrastructure to accommodate an increasing enrollment. In 1990, Middlebury enrolled just under 2,000 students. This year, there are 2,424 students enrolled. That's a sizable increase for such a small school. In the past 10 years, Midd has built 6 new dorms and 2 new dining halls to accommodate the increased size of the student body. In addition, Midd built a new science center, pool, and ice rink, and renovated the student center. A new library will open next year. Revenues from the expanded student body cover a small portion of the costs. The rest came from the endowment (during the boom years), and donations (including a recent single donation of $10 million). The new facilities are amazing, and, from what I understand, are having a positive influence on the number of students who apply and choose to matriculate at the college.

yea, they definitely are a draw...I was pretty impressed with them.

Is Midd also hiring more faculty to cover the extra students? Those are a lot of students to add w/out increasing faculty size...maybe that's why Midd fell a bit in the rankings this past year (student:faculty ratio drop?).

Also, 600 million endowment isn't something to complain about...even if it's not as large as Williams or Amherst, it's still huge.

Yes, they've added faculty to keep the student/faculty ratio the same. And Midd didn't fall in the rankings this past year--they stayed at #7 in U.S. News.

Oh, whoops!

Well that's good to hear!

Haon
Are you applying to Middlebury?
I seem to remember you were applying to Princeton too, weren't you?

By Arcadia (Arcadia) on Saturday, February 14, 2004 - 11:42 am: Edit

Haon is already a student at Williams, but he did apply to Middlebury.

Yes, I'm a student at Williams...Middlebury was probably my 2nd or 3rd choice after Williams...if I hadn't gotten into Williams it's very likely I'd be at Midd right now (I loved the school).
