what schools offer the best undergrad business program and cost within 25K for international students (including everything)? Thanks

By Timpcrk87 (Timpcrk87) on Thursday, January 29, 2004 - 06:18 pm: Edit

Some good public universities are:

Cal-Berkeley
Indiana-Bloomington
Wisconsin-Madison
N. Carolina-Chapel Hill
Texas-Austin

Michigan and Virginia are really good but they charge more than private schools for out-of-state students.

By Ceo1093 (Ceo1093) on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 08:09 am: Edit

But these schools are way expensive for international students. Their tuition go way beyond 25K.

Anybody else?

By Barrons (Barrons) on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 09:39 am: Edit

If you plan to work in the US, it really is important to go to the higher ranked schools. Grads of lower ranked schools do not get the good jobs.

By Savedbythebell7 (Savedbythebell7) on Saturday, January 31, 2004 - 02:37 pm: Edit

Grads of lower ranked schools do not get the good jobs..... it's about who you know, not what you know, regardless of your diploma. As long as you're going to a top 100 school you're fine in terms of being able to find a job. Even if you went to a school like Cal State - hayward you can get a pretty decent job.

By Barrons (Barrons) on Saturday, January 31, 2004 - 04:53 pm: Edit

What if you are Joe from another country--or even an average middleclass American kid without big connections--which is about 90% of the US population?? It is a fact that the best firms only recruit at top 10 or top 25 schools. If you think not, go look at the recruiting at Michigan business vs somewhere like Colorado State.

By Savedbythebell7 (Savedbythebell7) on Saturday, January 31, 2004 - 10:49 pm: Edit

Yeah if you graduate from Michigan Business, things will be handed to you on a silver platter. But in all honesty, if you wanted to go outside and make connections, it could be done at Colorado state. For instance, you could get an internship for the summer etc. I can tell you right now that Colorado State is ranked higher (99) than LMU/Gonzaga (112) and I know for a FACT they recruit at LMU and Gonzaga. Considering, i'm only a high school senior, i've never gone through college and seen the recruiting system/i've never had to get a job to support myself, my opinion may not hold but anyeways. In all honesty, I think the location you want to work in, makes all the difference, because if you want to land a job in Colorado somewhere, I think you'd be able to pull it off, no problem with a CSU degree. But lets say you wanted to get a job in Florida, or Maine, you might have a much more a difficult time. Of course with a Michigan Business degree, you could land a job anywhere in the Country.

Just my 2 cents

My dad went to the University of Tennessee, not known for it's law. He finished in the top 10 % of his law class, but was still given a job at a very elite firm. My point is that if you go to a moderately high ranked law school, and do well, you should have not trouble finding a job.

By Collegeparent (Collegeparent) on Sunday, February 01, 2004 - 12:37 am: Edit

Case in point: an extremely prominent multinational law firm based in Washington with offices in major U.S. and European cities will only recruit from seven law schools -- and will consider no one from anywhere else. The seven are Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Michigan, Georgetown, Virginia and Columbia.

By Savedbythebell7 (Savedbythebell7) on Sunday, February 01, 2004 - 03:24 am: Edit

They won't hire anyone from Boalt? Yeah my uncle went to IU - bloomington, not known for law and had the oppertunity to serve on the supreme court and works for a very elite firm in Indianapolis. But anyways, lets not clog this thread up with information about law schools and go back to the OP's topic of undergraduate business schools for cheap.

By Collegeparent (Collegeparent) on Sunday, February 01, 2004 - 09:50 am: Edit

Asked the head European recruiter about both Cal Berkeley (Boalt) and Duke and they said they had to cut it off somewhere.

Anyway, you're right about getting off topic.

There have been several threads about undergraduate business programs in this forum. They were within the past week or so and are easy to find. Suggest you check these out.

By Gameguy56 (Gameguy56) on Sunday, February 01, 2004 - 09:54 pm: Edit

geez, cutting off "SOMEWHERE" does not include cal and duke?, I bet they probibly think uChicago and NYU law grads should be mopping their floors and shining their shoes.

Anyway, on the topic

Good inexpensive undergrad buisiness schools in the USA
Some that have not ben mentioned are(in no order)...

Ohio State University-Columbus
Purdue Univ.-West Lafayette
Univ. of Minnesota-Twin Cities
U. of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign
Univ. of Southern California

Good lord, USC is most definetely not cheap, in fact, nor is Ohio State or Illinois.

By Savedbythebell7 (Savedbythebell7) on Monday, February 02, 2004 - 01:55 am: Edit

You should look at some of the California States (if you're going to be applying next year). Good business programs and relatively cheap even though there is a budget chrisis of sorts in California.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned Penn State's Smeal College. US News ranks several of its majors in the top 10 and the whole school ranks in the top 20. They are also building a kick ass new building that will help recruit better students and staff. Also, Penn State is better known worldwide than a lot of the schools listed above. The Honors College is also really good if you can get into it (that would also help to keep cost down as every student in the honors college gets a several thousand dollar scholarship).

By Ceo1093 (Ceo1093) on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - 12:14 am: Edit

Hey all,

Thanks for so many suggestions, I honestly appreciate them all.

Philvid2,

Thanks for a great idea. For some reason, I always thought Penn State is an expensive school, fortunately I was wrong. I will definetely apply, if the deadline has not passed yet.

I have already applied to UT at Austin ( late app:( ), and I am about to apply to UGA (deadline: April 1).

Thanks again everyone..

Anybody else?? :)

Philvid2,

WoW! Penn State.. I am so excited!! I will definetely apply, but they have so many campuses.. and they are still accepting applications. So which campus should I choose???

By Ceo1093 (Ceo1093) on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - 12:35 am: Edit

Princeton Review:
University Park is the only decent campus, and I am assuming the major campus... the Tuition ONLY is $20,600, it is a little expensive for me. As room+meal will round up to about $6-7K and plus my own personal expenses. Around 30-35K in Total. uhh well..

Correct me if I am wrong! Thanks

Arizona and Arizona State.

By Philvid2 (Philvid2) on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - 11:41 am: Edit

Penn State has rolling admissions so it is not too late. I checked Penn State's web site and they said that cost for an international student is between 25,000 to 34,000. If you get in the honors college, it may be too late for that, your cost should be less than 30,000. You are right that State College is the best campus by far.

By Philvid2 (Philvid2) on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - 11:56 am: Edit

PSU has a cost calculator on their web site at http://tuition.psu.edu/CostEstimate.asp

The only problem with it is that the out of state tuition rate is last years. You have to add about $2,000 to the total it gives you.

By Ceo1093 (Ceo1093) on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - 01:15 pm: Edit

Philvid2,

Sorry, but I had to drop it from my list. The overall cost definetely exceeds my budget, with 5-10,000. The schools seems to be a great place to get a quality education, but again, expensive. Thanks so much for your effort though. I do appreciate it.

U of Arizona, eller school of business, check it out for sure.

DStark & Savedbythebell7,

Actually, I have done some research on both ASU and U of AZ, early this Fall.

I was going to apply, and I still might (Deadline March 1), however, this far I have hesitated to do so.

I do not know a lot of about AZ state, although it may seem strange to you all, the first image that comes to mind when I think about that place is a desert with a vast population of mexicans. It is not that I do not like Mexicans, just I would like to experience a real American college life, with Americans in it. :)

Could you please elaborate more about these Universities. I am more interested in ASU -I like big cities.

Thanks.

I can provide a bit of input as to name recognition of Penn State outside the United States. I have spent a lot of time outside the states (in Europe mainly) and was totally surprised at how well people recognized the name Penn State. Outside of the US nobody has heard of a lot of the "top" schools but PSU has name recognition easily on par with any other school in the states. And no they're not confusing it with U.Penn in fact, if anything when people talk about U.Penn a lot of people thought they were talking about Penn State. Just a little input in that department for those coming from abroad.

With the exception of Harvard and Yale, the Ivys don't cary very much name recognition outside the states, and although U. Penn has an excellent buisness school, see the previous comment about U.Penn often being confused with PSU, which probably has better name recognition.

By Savedbythebell7 (Savedbythebell7) on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - 05:36 pm: Edit

U of A, is something like 80 percent white, most kids come from out of state, over 50 percent. So as long as you're in the campus area of U of A, you'll be surrounded by Americans and not mexican immigrants.

By Savedbythebell7 (Savedbythebell7) on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - 05:38 pm: Edit

The reason I applied to Arizona over ASU, is the fact that UoA has more of an Academic reputation than that of ASU and i've noticed recruiters prefer UoA students.

Savedbythebell,

So how do you like there so far? I just checked on Princetonreview, and you are absolutely right! Academics rank in ASU is 68(!!!!!), although UoA is not that great too 72. But I know for a fact, that both schools are in Top tier.. correct me if I am wrong.

So that will definetely be something to consider. And i was wrong about the deadline, it is all the way until May, 1.

Is notification on rolling basis in UoA?

By Savedbythebell7 (Savedbythebell7) on Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - 07:39 pm: Edit

Yeah both schools are in top tier, especially for business. Arizona ranked the 14th best public undergraduate business school in the nation. 22nd overall tied with Notre Dame.

Penn State: name recognition is a complicated phenomenon, just like fame itself. I mean who, in the world, apart from Elvis, the Pope, and maybe the current American president, is really known to everybody? Even the word 'Harvard', which surely signifies the world's best known academic organisation, might mean very little to a lot of native English speakers outside of the USA and Canada.

On the other hand when we become more specific we can quantify things more effectively. Most educated people will have heard of Oxford as well as Harvard. To narrow it down further most people in the social sciences and the world of public administration, from China to Peru, will have heard of LSE, just as most of their technological equivalents will know about MIT or Imperial College. And these names will register with large swathes of the middle class public in country after country. And believe me, in a world of 6 billion people that is an awful lot of significant name recognition.

But Penn State? The idea that many people outside the USA have heard of Penn State? I don't think so, not even in the most specialised professional strata, and this is in full awareness of the drawing power of US universities: Yale, Chicago, Columbia, Princeton, Stanford, UCLA, Caltech, MIT, Cornell, Brown, Berkeley,Virginia, Texas at Austin, Amherst, Wellesley etc etc-these are all names that will make waves in the average European/Asian boardroom or university staffroom, but sorry not Penn State, reputable though it may be.

You see that's another problem with name-recognition-it's random on the day to day level-it's perfectly possible to meet five people in a row, in different places, all of whom have never heard of Cambridge but who are aware of Penn State. That does not mean that Cambridge is unknown and Penn State famous, it just means that our everyday experience is chaotic and often arbitrary, until we check it out against other evidence-then we find that Penn State's name recognition pales beside that of any one of a good 30 US universities..

Penn State-sorry, I'm sure it's a nice place, but..

well said. i lived abroad for 8 years, and i can tell you that most people have no idea about Penn State. you would get a few that mistake it for UPENN(i did too), other than that its relatively unknown outside of North america. Texas at austin and wellesley arent too well known abroad either. Ivys carry the biggest name recognition obviously, followed by UCLA, MIT, Stanford etc...
