Can anyone make any suggestions (books or links) for sources of information about colleges that deal with "real" information as opposed to the packaged statistics and marketing. I've read Lauren Pope's book, and although some of the school's there intrigue me, I find it hard to believe all his superlatives. Not only that, some comments e,g, "no kids with green hair" are a bit off putting to someone whose child has had pink, blue AND green hair in the last year! Some advice on how to "read between the lines" might be in order, too. We're not looking at Ivy league. It can be hard to tell, without actually visiting, just how confortable a non-conformist might be on these campuses. Obviously, visits will be made, but we're just trying at the monent to get the number of "possibles" down to manageable proportions.

Thanks

Hi, Jennifer. Try the Broader Minds Web site for some real-world reviews of colleges. Also, check our alphabetic index of schools here on our discussion board. If you don't see any of your candidates listed, start a thread or threads of your own and ask for some informed opinions from people who have first-hand experience with those schools. BTW, check back and let us know what you find. Good luck!

Many colleges and universities take part in the Daily Jolt. Anyone can select a school from the Jolt membership roster and log onto its site to check out information that includes everything from dormitory floor plans to catchy faculty quotes and cafeteria offerings. These sites are aimed at CURRENT students, but school-searchers can eavesdrop on Jolt chats to see what campus topics are hot or can chat as guest users to ask college students about their schools.
