What can you tell me about the differences between the University of Wisconsin and Indiana University? Financially, IU would be cheaper (in state), but our son thinks he prefers Wisconsin. Is it really worth the extra money? He does not know what he wants to major in, possibly English, History, political science. He is possibly interested in going to law school someday. Also, he is waitlisted at WashU and would really like to go there(he attended their summer scholars program last summer and loved it), but a part of him just wants to make a decision and move on. Should he stay on the waitlist? Would it be worth the extra money?(if he finally got in) I would appreciate any advice or info.

"Is College X worth the extra money compared to Collegy Y" is really hard to answer, Janet. An awful lot depends on the unique aspects of the colleges and how they fit with the student's needs. For example, will the style of learning be substantially different? Does one school have a fantastic reputation in the department your son is interested in? Is there a big difference in residential life, or campus environment? And of course the other question you need to look at is the impact on your family finances - a $10K difference might be a minor inconvenience to some families, but a crippling load for others.

I think the Washington waitlist is probably a long shot, but I guess I'd approach the question by asking whether he would have attended there had he been admitted in the first place. If the answer to that is an unqualified "absolutely", then perhaps he should go the extra mile to stay on the waitlist and campaign for admission. Otherwise, I'd pick a school and get on with life.

Certainly, Indiana and Wisconsin are fine schools, and either would serve as a good platform for law school. I've visited IU, and it's a great campus. Bloomington makes most lists of best college towns.

Good luck, you son has a couple of very good options!
