What are some good prestigious universities in California? Any that offer large amounts of scholarships or financial aid? I know Californian schools cant really compete with Ivy status but are there any that come close?

The UC schools, the most competative being UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD..and from there on. Then there are private schools, including the Claremont Colleges (Pomona, Pitzer, CMC, HArvey Mudd, Scripps), Stanford, Occidental (not as prestigious as others listed)...Generally the private universities hand out more financial aid, yet they also cost over $20,000 more a year.

CalTech of course, rated number one by U.S. News and World Report for financial aid.

What do you mean California schools can't compete with the Ivy League? Ever heard of Stanford?

Many of the Cali schools rank higher in many different situations than the "lower" IVy league schools like Dartmouth and Cornell. Something to think about.

the UCs are the BEST public college system in the ENTIRE COUNTRY. and they don't charge tuition for in-state students. (yes there's fees...but compared to tuition...it's really not that much). assuming u live in state, there's also Cal-Grants and there's a program where the top 4% of students get in automatically.
if that's not ur cup of tea....try USC, Stanford, Mt. Saint Mary's....i dunno what else

Read Cali's post upthread...it's a good one.
Stanford and UC Berkeley are fully Ivy-equivalent.
UCLA, UCSD, the Claremont Colleges, etc., are near-Ivies, UCLA in particular in a number of departments.

UC Berkeley's engineering program in general, which includes disciplines from Civil to Chemical to EECS, is placed top 5, with the exception of Bio. E. (I think),which is 10th; Bio. E. is only 4 yrs old however. Humanities are also strong. But if it's engineering you're talking about, Berkeley beats most Ivys. The only notable school that places better is MIT.
