Do adcoms like it or hate it if you send in more stuff? For instance, if they require one recommendation but say more are accepted how many should you send? Also I'm sending recommendations from two of my counselors (from two of the different schools I've went to) and doing optional essays and such.

Is it better to trim your application or beef it up?

TRIM! At every school I toured & went to an adcom presentation, they ALL spoke about how much they hate to get extra material. The only acceptable "extra" is a music tape or art slides (only if you are majoring & the appropriate dept. head needs to review) and ONE, maximum, one extra recommendation & then ONLY if the extra rec has something different to add, like an employer or coach. You will seriously annoy the overworked adcom if they pick up your file and it is thick. Do you really want to start off with an irritated adcom?? The other consideration is your ability to follow directions. The app tells you exactly what they are looking for, follow directions!

If they state it right on the application that more are accepted, usually they tell you. Though, I'd say 1 more only. I agree with Lhm, only if the recommendation can provde the adcom with new insight about you. And also, if you send in an art portfolio, some schools have specific requirements (slides only, etc.) You should e-mail the admissions officer for your area (if there is a specific one) and ask, then you'll be sure and it will show your interest in the school (some schools even keep track of how many times you call/e-mail etc.).

I've heard someone with adcom experience say, "The thicker the application, the thicker the student."
