By the way, Stanford -- Given the choice, my daughter went with Stanford although I was fighting for Yale because of a family history -- She made the wise decision -- made even wiser now since she won't run into Constellation in New Haven.

it depends on what your major would be. There is no definite answer to which school is better. Some people prefer Yale, others prefer Stanford. But the most important thing is which school do YOU prefer. You will be the person who will spend the next four years (often best years) of you life in the college of YOUR choice.
that's just my imput. You can disreguard it if you wish.
| By Collegeguy (Collegeguy) on Sunday, January 18, 2004 - 02:56 am: Edit |
Good call, Amethyst. Totally personal preference. And that includes Harvard, too. Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Yale. All great.
But I do admit that Harvard is significantly more prestigious than the rest...
and surveys show that Harvard students are also more stressed and more unhappy...

Early applications per spot in the 2008 class:
Yale 3.2
Stanford 2.5
Harvard 2.4
Princeton 1.7
% of 2007 class with NMSC-sponsored National Merit Scholarships: Caltech 30%, Harvard 22%, Yale 18%, MIT 15%, Stanford 14%, Princeton 14%

Yale - somewhat more known to the world, than Stanford.
| By Bunmushroom (Bunmushroom) on Sunday, February 01, 2004 - 12:54 am: Edit |
Applicants per spot means nothing except how small a class is. Total # of applicants is how poplular a school is, and in that case, neither school can compete with the UC schools. Yield is how desirable a school is because it shows how many qualified applicants chose to go to that school. Yield is what counts, esp for these schools, because many ppl get into hyps, and have to deside between them.

If you want to study anything humanities related stay away from Stanford. I have talked to many Stanford grads and they all say that their experiences in the undergraduate humanities departments were mediocre at best. So while the sciences are probably better at Stanford than at Yale, the differences in the quality of the humanities programs tips the scale decisively in favor of Yale. I also got the vibe that undergraduates at Stanford are not treated as well as they are at Yale.
Not to mention that I think that New Haven is a much better undergraduate environment than Palo Alto. Yes, Palo Alto is much nicer and safer and located in a warm climate, but it is a bit too suburban for my tastes. There didn't seem to be as much catering to college students as there was in New Haven, and the suburbanness of Palo Alto makes everything expensive whereas New Haven's supposed ghettoness does keep the prices down. Also, I actually like the climate of New Haven better, mainly because I am from Arizona and I am sick of warm sunny days and the cold gray northeastern climate appeals to me more than the balmy Mediterranean climate of Palo Alto.

Stanford. There's an excellent residence based humanities program for freshmen(used to be called SLE-Structured Liberal Education-might be called something else now)Very leftist, but that's academia. The kids are kinda geeky, but very bright, motivated, by far the most intellectual, if that's your cup of tea.(It happens to be mine.) Lots of future college professor types. I was a writing tutor in the program when I was there, and really enjoyed it.

So it ends when which ever university gets to 50 first wins? Is there a limit or a deadline? But we know that it won't end and will be temporarily silenced when the USNWR rankings issue hits the newsstands in September -- which will only reenergize the arguement further. So until then, perhaps the limit and deadline will be when all the acceptances are in from both schools in May?

Princeton
U. Mich Ann Arbor
Ohio State Univ.
Univ. Virginia
Case Western Reserve
Carnegie Mellon
Ohio University
UC Berkeley
UNC Chapel Hill
Rutgers
Miami Univ. of Ohio
UPitt

I had a bet with a friend to see how many decent schools we could get in. I did end up getting deferred EA and then rejected RD from Harvard and rejected RD from MIT. But 16 for 18 was alright.
