My GPA isn't stellar(3.5 sophomore year/2.7 freshman)
I hope to get a 1450 on the SAT (800m 650V)
I got a 135(m+v) on the PSAT's
My school has a great art program and I have seen lots of top nouch artists in my school. My art teachers think I am applying to an art school, so I assume that they think my paintings and drawings are good enough to compete with other artists.
I know that I am better at math/science but there are more people who apply to top schools who are just as smart but their GPA would be much higher than mine. In order to compete with their perfect stats I might have to go to school intrested in recruiting artists.
Which top schools are trying to recruit artists?

top schools with good art programs will probably be looking for good artists. I don't have a complete list but I know brown has a great program with RISDE and Williams has excellent studio art and art history programs...either of those two schools are probably worth looking into.

You'll need to put together a good portfolio to apply to most art programs. Consider carefully whether you have the time and desire to put that together. Also, many schools will still require you to meet their overall academic standards for admission and THEN apply to the art school for admission as well (WUSTL for example is very clear about this) Also keep in mind that many larger universities will usually place you into the art school, not the school of arts & sciences. Be sure to find out how hard it will be to switch and still graduate on time if that's what you're planning to do.
That said, take a look at the art programs at Emory, Rice, Washington U in St. Louis as possibilities. USC and Syracuse also have good art schools. The Ivy's, as far as I have been able to find out, aren't really looking to recruit many art students. Of course, many of the top LAC's -like Vassar, Connecticut College, etc - have good art programs - but, again, at many you'll be asked to submit a portfolio in addition to having the right stats if you're applying for the art program.

Ivies are looking to recruit top students in all disciplines and interests including in art. As always, they look to create well rounded classes represented a variety of disciplines and other types of diversity.
It can help to start winning some art contests -- contest that are beyond the school level if possible.

Do schools like Yale and Princeton look for talented artists in the admission process in order to assure their Vis-Art program has some talented students? It would seem to me that they would be taking a chance waiting for freshman and sophmores to try out for those programs only to realize that there is a lack of talent.
