I just thought this would be a fun thread... what are some movies that have mentioned famous universities in them.

A Beautiful Mind: Nash goes to Princeton and M.I.T. (Wheeler Labs). Also, Nash says his son is going to Harvard.

K-PAX: Kevin Spacey graduated from Harvard.

Indepedence Day: The Jewish guy went to M.I.T.

Fun thread indeed! In "When Harry Met Sally", Harry describes a date to Sally. The date went to Michigan State, which gives him a panic attack, because it reminds him of his ex-wife. Not that the ex went there, he says, but she went to Northwestern, also a Big 10 school. And of course, at the begining of the movie, Harry and Sally are leaving the University of Chicago.

In "The Big Chill", everyone went to Michigan; they watch a Michigan-Ohio State game on TV.

Here's some MIT movie trivia --

Remember the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie that came out a few years ago? All of the external scenes of "Wassamatta U." were shots of MIT, taken at the main entrance at 77 Mass Ave, and in the Great Court on Mem. Drive, with the words "WASSAMATTA UNIVERSITY" digitally replacing the famous "MASSACHVSETTES INSTITVTE OF TECHNOLOGY." (V instead of U is deliberate.)

The movie "Good Will Hunting" took place at MIT. Some of the external shots were MIT, but all of the interior scenes looked NOTHING like MIT.

Legally Blond: I never saw the movie, but I believe Reese Witherspoon goes to Harvard Law school in it. A little trivia: it was actually filmed in UCLA because it's near Hollywood.

Seinfeld - The restaurant exterior shot that they show for the coffee shop all the cast goes to is actually Tom's Restaurant on 112th St & Broadway near Columbia. I ate at least 2 meals a day there for several years while a student. Larry David, Exec. Producer of the show, went to Columbia.

Tom's Restaurant is proudly Greek in the classic John Belushi/Saturday Nite Live "Hambugga! Hambugga! Pepsi! Pepsi!" sense with photos and postcards of Greek scenes on the walls. They are proud of their Seinfeld connection and they sell Seinfeld/Tom's T-shirts at the restaurant.

(Probably more than you ever wanted to know on this topic. My wife frequently tells me to turn off the 'tourguide' switch!!)

It's not a film, but I know that the outside scenes of Dawson's Creek are filmed outside Duke.

"Animal House" was written by and based on a Dartmouth alum's experiences. Furthermore, Dr. Seuss (not quite a film but lots of books just the same) graduated from Dartmouth 99 years ago.

Oh, and 10 Things I Hate About You was filmed entirely in Tacoma and Seattle, Washington. I was an extra in that movie when it was filmed a few years ago. Sarah Lawrence is not even nearby.

Several movies have been made at or around Smith College in picturesque Northampton, MA. "Malice" (with Nicole Kidman, Alec Baldwin and other luminaries) was one of them, and the Smith campus was transformed into "Westerly College." A number of Smith students and staff members got to be extras in the film. Amusingly, the opening scene shows several "professors" walking into Smith's College Hall. I knew most of the extras who played these roles. They were all chosen because of their "professorial" appearance, and yet not one was a true faculty member. One was a college fundraiser, one was a faculty wife, and one worked in the mail room, but they were the folks who were deemed to look more academic than the real profs who aimed to be extras as well but didn't make the cut. Hooray for Hollywood!
