Which has a better, more known, engineering program?

By Cru (Cru) on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 11:23 pm: Edit

Well, accroding to U.S. news, Gatech is better. But, I would rather go to Cornell. It's a great school that you can't turn down.

For engineering, Geogia Tech definitely.

For engineering, Ga Tech. But what is student life like at Tech?

By Wade Leahy on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 08:39 am: Edit

I think you should go for Cornell. I heard some real nasty things about Gatech.

What nasty things about GaTech?

By Ares15 (Ares15) on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 04:53 pm: Edit

And Wade Leahy is such a reliable source apparently...

Tech was ranked like 2 higher than Cornell for engineering in US news. But overall, Cornell is SUCH A BETTER SCHOOL!! Not only is it ivy, so the non-engineering departments are better, but the social life there, the campus, and just the overall college is a lot better.

By Bob on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 10:51 am: Edit

I still ask Wade: What are the nasty things you have heard about Ga Tech?

Further, what are the advantages (if any) of going to a Tech school for engineering, rather than doing engineering at a non-Tech school? From the postings there seems to be a certain negative about Tech, perhaps due to its homogeneity--(just about) everyone is doing the same thing. Well, is this really a bad thing? Why?

By cornell is better on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 03:45 pm: Edit

No. If that were the case, that means MIT is also bad. And you don't see anyone saying bad •••• about MIT. It's because Ga Tech life is horrible. Go to this website to learn more about it.

I have looked at this site, and I really can't tell if it's a joke or not. Is there anyone in cyberspace (and at Ga Tech) who can tell us what to make of this site--parody or not?

Not being at Ga Tech, my sense is that it is a no-nonsense, fairly conservative/WASPish, male-dominated school that trains you to be an engineer and to be a successful one at that. It seems to have a heavy workload and a tough-love approach. So, I can imagine some students being bummed out by a distinct lack of 'fun'(=women?). Is that why Tech is a "nasty," "horrible" place, or am I missing something.

Finally, is MIT vs Ga Tech a contest about Boston (liberal) vs Atlanta (fairly conservative)?

By world class on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 07:38 pm: Edit

No. MIT vs Ga Tech is a contest between great (really good) and world-class (amazingly good)

By Bob on Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 10:05 am: Edit

I agree. While both are excellent in engineering, MIT supports engineering with outstanding physics, etc. Ga Tech is more 'practical' (real-world oriented). My sense is that there is a prevasive vocational orientation at Ga Tech, unlike MIT. Maybe this accounts for its lack of 'fun.'

To go back to the original post: where would you go--Cornell or MIT, and why?

By Cru (Cru) on Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 11:40 am: Edit

OH my god....
I looked at the site, and I really can't tell if it's a joke or not. Is the site serious? if yes, it sounds really bad....
And....
bob, the original post was Cornell or GT, not Cornell or MIT.
I choose Cornell

Cornell would be Prof. Goldblatt's choice.
