Can someone help me out with a list or link to the top undergrad history departments in the country?
Also, how do Pitt and Penn St rank?
Thanks

For history, much depends on the type of history you want to study as well as the type of school you're looking for (i.e., liberal arts, university, Ivy, etc.)
Of the Ivy's, I'd say the top schools for history are probably Yale, Columbia, and UPenn, although really all of the Ivy's have good history departments.
Other schools with outstanding history departments, in no particular order of rank:
Universities:
Boston University, UC Berkeley, UCLA, U of Chicago, Duke, Emory, Johns Hopkins, UNC Chapel Hill, U Pittsburgh, STanford, Vanderbilt, William and Mary, U of Virginia, Boston College, Georgetown, George WAshington U
LAC's: Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Bryn Mawr, Carleton, Claremont McKenna, Colgate, Connecticut College, Davidson, Dickinson, Gettysburg, Grinnell, Hamilton, Haverford, Lawrence, Macalester, Muhlenberg, Pomona, Smith, Swarthmore, Trinity (TX), Union, Vassar, Washington and LEe, Wellesley, Whitman.
In general, when looking for an undergraduate history program consider: the size of the department, courses offered and their availablity, percentage of discussion classes vs. straight lectures, opportunity to do independent research, historical archives or other resources available on campus (i.e., special library collections), availability of internship opportunities.
